The comic book movie boom is set to continue in a major way over the next few years, and today we're laying out all the superpowered sequels that are coming soon to theaters. Of the 18 superhero follow-ups in some stage of development, only half actually have confirmed release dates as of now. So while the other nine films on our list are in the works to some degree, unforeseen circumstances could arise that result in their delay or cancellation. Indeed, the odds of the last three in particular actually making to the screen at some point are iffy at best.Six of the in-development sequels are products of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though that number could soon spike if Disney's acquisition of Fox's Marvel properties ends up going through. Meanwhile, five of these follow-ups fall under the DCEU banner, but in the aftermath of Justice League's underperformance, it's hard to say which of their projects they'll actually end up following through on.Related: Marvel Buying X-Men Rights Would Be Bad For FansIt's not all Marvel and DC, of course, as several other superhero properties will get their time to shine in the next few years. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (May 4th, 2018)

The next superhero sequel fans have to look forward to is arguably the biggest one we've ever seen. Avengers: Infinity War will see the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (excluding the folks on TV, that is) uniting to face off against Thanos, who's coming to Earth to gather up the remaining Infinity Stones. The biggest MCU movie to date arrives 10 years and two days after the theatrical debut of Iron Man, and it's set to change Marvel's shared universe as we know it forever. Here's hoping that the Mad Titan lives up to the hype and delivers the MCU's best villain yet.

DEADPOOL 2 (June 1st, 2018)

After the stunning box office success of last year's Deadpool movie ($783 million worldwide on a budget of just $58 million), Fox moved quickly to get the Merc with a Mouth back on the big screen. The first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel debuted a few weeks ago and introduced all the new faces we'll be meeting the second time around, including Josh Brolin's Cable and Zazie Beetz's Domino. But honestly, as long as Ryan Reynolds is back in the titular role, it wouldn't matter if Deadpool 2 was 90 minutes of Wade Wilson's Bob Ross impression. This movie is going to hit no matter what.

THE INCREDIBLES 2 (June 15th, 2018)

Fans have waited well over a decade to see more of the Parr family, so the final six month stretch until The Incredibles 2 hits theaters should be a cakewalk. A teaser trailer for the long-awaited sequel debuted a few weeks ago, showing off the powers of baby Jack-Jack and little else. Despite holding back any real details surrounding the film itself, the 53 second teaser became the most viewed animated movie trailer of all time -- in less than three days.

Yeah, this one is going to make a ton of money.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (July 6th, 2018)

Ant-Man and the Wasp

The first Ant-Man movie was a solid, if unremarkable heist film, and its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, will continue mixing subgenres by becoming the MCU's first romantic comedy. That may not sound like much of a selling point for superhero movie fans, but the addition of Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Walton Goggins to the cast should help with the hype levels. That whole quantum realm thing could also play a major role in the MCU going forward, ensuring that the shared universe's two smallest heroes are just as indispensable as the rest.

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX (November 2nd, 2018)

X-Men Dark Phoenix and a Funeral

Just yesterday, we got our first official look at the next chapter in the main X-Men movie storyline, Dark Phoenix, thanks to a revealing spread in Entertainment Weekly. It's looking like Professor X and the gang are going to have a rough go of it in the fourth film starring the reboot cast, with official images teasing funerals, tears, and Sophie Turner's Jean Grey going full Phoenix. The EW spread also teases a massive twist that will change the franchise forever -- perhaps even send them flying into the MCU, who knows.

We still have no idea which villain Jessica Chastain is playing, by the way, but she looks suitably creepy with bleach blonde hair, so there's that.

GLASS (UNBREAKABLE II) (January 18th, 2019)

The surprise reveal at the end of M. Night Shyamalan's already awesome Split -- that it takes place in the same comic book-y universe as the director's 2000 film, Unbreakable -- was one of the director's best twists yet. Now that filming has wrapped on the crossover/sequel, Glass, it's simply a waiting game. A really long one.

The surprisingly lengthy amount of time allotted for post-production aside, Glass will see Bruce Willis' David Dunn take on James McAvoy's supernatural Kevin Crumb/The Beast. With Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price lurking in the shadows, Glass is shaping up to be Shyamalan's craziest film to date.

AVENGERS 4 (May 3rd, 2019)

Marvel is actually filming Infinity War and the as-of-yet-untitled fourth Avengers film back to back, releasing the fourth film one year after Thanos arrives on the scene and starts blowing everything up. The war with the Mad Titan will rage on in the 22nd film in the MCU, which will mark the conclusion of the shared universe's third phase. Marvel president Kevin Feige actually described it as the finale of the shared universe as a whole, which is as exciting as it is terrifying.

And who knows, by the time this one hits theaters, it may have even added a few X-Men characters to its roster.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING SEQUEL (July 5th, 2019)

The first film of the MCU's Phase 4 will be a new Spider-Man solo flick, which almost definitely won't be called Homecoming 2, because that would be dumb. Returning alongside star Tom Holland will be two of the six screenwriters behind Homecoming (yes, that film seriously had half a dozen credited screenwriters), and director Jon Watts is expected back for the sequel as well. No word yet on which villains Spidey will be facing off with, nor whether we'll finally see J. Jonah Jameson grace the big screen again.

WONDER WOMAN 2 (November 1st, 2019)

The DCEU may be in a state of disarray in the aftermath of Justice League's disappointing debut, but at least they have the massive success of Wonder Woman to fall back on. After racking up over $820 million off of a $150 million budget, a sequel for the Amazon warrior was quickly given the green light. Star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins will return for the Cold War-set follow-up, which starts filming in the summer. Whether or not Chris Pine will (somehow) be brought along for the ride remains to be seen.

That's the last film on our list with a confirmed release date, so just know that things do get a bit murkier from here.

Kingsman 3 (Fall 2019...probably)

Like the first Kingsman movie, Kingsman: The Golden Circle proved to be an unheralded hit with critics and audiences alike, and the two combined to rack up over $809 million at the box office. The success of the first two films guaranteed that a third entry wouldn't be too far behind, and Kingsman 3 is expected to arrive in the fall of 2019.

As long as director Matthew Vaughn returns to direct star Taron Egerton, consider us on board. If the latter's wish comes true and Dwayne Johnson gets brought into the picture, however, the threequel's financial take could end up rivaling the combined tallies of the first two films.

X-FORCE (2019 or 2020)

An X-Force movie has been in some form of development for over four years now, but now that Drew Goddard has signed on to write and direct, fans shouldn't have to wait too much longer. The only members of the team that we know for sure are coming along for the ride are Deadpool, Cable, and Domino, so it remains to be seen which mutant heroes will be joining them onscreen. We should have a better idea by the time Deadpool 2 hits theaters in June.

Cable actor Josh Brolin says X-Force could start filming as early as next year, leaving open the possibility for a late 2019 release, but you probably shouldn't expect this one until 2020.

DOCTOR STRANGE 2 (2019 or 2020)

Surprisingly little is known about what the MCU will look like in the aftermath of the fourth Avengers film, though we do know that Doctor Strange will be getting another solo film...eventually. Things were a bit less certain when Kevin Feige spoke about Phase 4 back in April, but we know that director Scott Derrickson signed on to helm the follow-up back in October, so we'll surely be getting more of Benedict Cumberbatch's American accent in the very near future.

We should learn more about the plot and the villains of Doctor Strange 2 once the third and fourth Avengers flicks have hit theaters. Marvel doesn't want to spoil too much by confirming sequels for characters that they want us to think might die in those movies, after all.

SUICIDE SQUAD 2 (2019 or 2020)

The Rock and Suicide Squad

Despite the box office success of last year's Suicide Squad, there didn't seem to be too many fans calling for a follow-up. The film's poor critical reception coupled with talks of spinoffs for its two most popular characters (Harley Quinn and Deadshot) pushed the sequel to the backburner in the eye of the public. But with Gavin O'Connor now on board to write and direct, Suicide Squad 2 is eying a start date for this coming March, putting it in line for release in late 2019 or early 2020.

Here's hoping the film gets the added boost of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam -- and that O'Connor actually gets the time to properly develop the project before filming begins.

HARLEY/JOKER MOVIE (2019-2020)

Harley Quinn was the true breakout character of Suicide Squad, and accordingly, Warner Bros. moved quickly to get star Margot Robbie back in the role as soon as possible. But well over a year after her cinematic debut, we're still not entirely sure what project we'll see her in next, since she's a likely star in at least four different projects at the moment. The aforementioned Suicide Squad 2, David Ayer's Gotham City Sirens, and a rumored solo film are all on the docket, as is a team-up movie with Jared Leto's Joker. Aside from SS2, the latter seems like the most likely project to get the full green light from Warner Bros at this point.

Robbie has confirmed that she'll be returning to the role next year, so fans shouldn't have to wait too long to see the former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist tearing up the big screen.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 (2020)

All the Guardians of the Galaxy standing together in Vol 2.

We can expect to see whichever Guardians manage to survive the next two Avengers flicks return to the screen sometime in 2020, according to director James Gunn. Vol. 3 will apparently set up the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies, expanding the cosmic side of the MCU into exciting new terrain. And despite that post-credits tease in Vol. 2, Adam Warlock is apparently not a lock to appear in the third film.

As is the case with the next Spider-Man movie and Doctor Strange 2, it could be a while before we learn much more about this one.

MAN OF STEEL SEQUEL (???)

Man of Steel 2 - Matthew Vaughn may direct

After Man of Steel led directly to the Batman v Superman movie, which led into Justice League, fans weren't too sure when to expect another solo film from Henry Cavill's Superman. Sequel talks have heated up in the aftermath of the character's rebirth in Justice League, and back in September, director Matthew Vaughn confirmed that he'd had discussions with Warner Bros about helming the film. There's no script in place as of yet, however, though with the amount of buzz surrounding the prospective follow-up, it's hard to imagine Warner Bros letting Henry Cavill's contract expire without giving him his time to shine in one last solo adventure.

JUSTICE LEAGUE 2 (???)

Let's cut right to it: Justice League is not meeting Warner Bros' expectations, neither critically nor commercially. Many assumed that it would be the first DCEU film to crack a billion at the worldwide box office, and instead, it's actually on pace to lose a significant amount of money for the studio. There was a lot riding on this one, and its underperformance is calling the future of DC's shared movie universe into question. The last thing Warner Bros is likely thinking about is a direct sequel, though we know that screenwriters were working on it as recently as a few weeks ago.

If Justice League 2 does end up getting the green light, it probably won't happen for a few years yet.

POWER RANGERS 2 (???)

Power Rangers in the 2017 Movie

We've saved the iffiest entry for last. The Power Rangers reboot heavily underwhelmed at the box office earlier this year, totaling just $142 million on a reported budget of $100 million and leaving the future of the franchise in doubt. Impressive merchandizing figures could just save this sequel, however, though we haven't heard much about it since star Dacre Montgomery spoke with us about its chances back in August.

If a follow-up does end up getting approved, the introduction of the Green Ranger is a virtual certainty, and Lord Zedd would be a safe bet to play the main villain.
