Starting with Man Of Steel in 2013 and still going with Black Adam of 2022, the DC Extended Universe has become the home of a wide variety of superheroes as well as anti-heroes. One of the best aspects of the DCEU is its tendency to make every character and film franchise unique.

The many filmmakers of the DCEU bring different flavors to each film: some are grand epics such as the Zack Snyder trilogy, some are classic superhero stories such as Wonder Woman, and so on. Each superhero introduced so far dispatches justice and upholds morals differently, with some teetering on straight-up villainy.

25 Vigilante

Vigilante talking with Peacemaker in his trailer in Peacemaker (2022)

The truth is that the DCEU portrayal of Vigilante on the Peacemaker show is not a hero, villain, or antihero; he's a dim-witted man with an obsession for violence and uses a superhero guise as a means to satisfy that obsession.

He doesn't care about justice or revenge, to him, it's just fun and games to dress up. Though he has plenty of moments where he's willing to take on any fight, he doesn't really care about the world. The closest thing he shows genuine care for is Peacemaker.

24 Peacemaker

John Cena as Christopher Smith covered in wounds in Peacemaker (2022)

When audiences first met Christopher Smith AKA Peacemaker in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, he was definitely a villain. He was funny and had several stand-out action sequences, but he was definitely a crude and misogynistic villain blindly serving under Amanda Waller which led to him murdering Rick Flag in cold blood.

When he got his own spin-off series on HBO Max, Peacemaker saw some improvement as a character. He was haunted by the death of Flag, his own failure, and his heartless monster of a father. Though he is far from being a proper hero, he did solidify himself as one of DC's best anti-heroes.

23 Huntress

Huntress aiming her crossbow in Harley Quinn Birds Of Prey (2020)

Much like her comic book counterpart, Huntress is simply a violent killer of criminals and one of DC's most famous anti-heroes. She can be compared to the Punisher of the Marvel universe where her tragic backstory has led her down a path of murdering mob bosses to get revenge.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead's portrayal of Huntress had the least amount of screentime in Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey, but audiences were able to get a grasp on her. She's not a hero which is why she is not a typical hero of Gotham City, but when she needs to be, she can still be a skilled protector of Gotham City.

22 King Shark

Nanaue AKA King Shark point out his hand in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021)

Not a hero or villain, Nanaue is essentially a child in a grown shark man's body. He follows his friends around, does what he's told, and eats whenever he has the chance. In a way, King Shark is a living weapon that characters like Bloodsport use against villains and alien starfish monsters.

However, there is more kindness to King Shark than most members of Task Force X. All he wants is a friend, and he's willing to take on monsters in order to please his new friends, resulting in a more touching anti-hero.

21 Bloodsport

Bloodsport leading Task Force X into battle against Starro in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021)

At first, Bloodsport is not much of a hero considering how he treats his own daughter. He is also one of the only people in the DC universe to actually win a fight against Superman thanks to a Kryptonite bullet.

However, over the course of The Suicide Squad, the audience sees him slowly develop a heart thanks to fellow squad members such as Ratcatcher II and Rick Flag. Bloodsport goes from a heartless assassin wearing one of the best suits in the movie to quite the effective leader for the squad in the climactic battle against Starro The Conqueror.

20 Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter reveals himself in Zack Snyder's Justice League

This character could raise in the ranks with subsequent appearance within the DCEU. However, going off his time as General Swanwick in both Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice as well as his official appearance as Martian Manhunter in Zack Snyder's Justice League, he's not that heroic.

Fans were happy that their theories were correct and to finally see the character in live-action but he was essentially a glorified cameo. He never fought in any battles and remained hidden as a human until the Justice League united.

19 Renee Montoya

Renee Montoya analyzing a crime scene in Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020)

Like always, Renee Montoya is a dedicated officer of the GCPD and in Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey, she was willing to lose her job to protect Cassandra Cain and put an end to Roman Sionis AKA Black Mask.

In a place like Gotham City, Montoya is a rare breed which made her perfect for the Birds Of Prey and even though she had no powers, gadgets, or even a superhero suit, she still kept up with the other heroes. Hopefully, if she returns in a sequel, fans will get to see her embrace the superhero life as The Question.

18 Polka-Dot Man

Polka-Dot Man grinning with joy in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021)

He was genetically altered by his own mother to be a superhero but ended up becoming a mentally unstable man with metahuman abilities. That doesn't stop him from being a shockingly surprising powerhouse in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Polka-Dot Man proved to be effective, able to disintegrate his victims using his signature dots from another dimension.

He is a tragic character throughout the film, but Bloodsport manages to turn him into a superhero with one final action that not only cured him of his mental illness but destroyed one foot of Starro. Even though Starro would end up killing him, it was nice to see him happy for a few seconds.

17 Deadshot

Deadshot on top of a car fighting zombies with his wrist guns in Suicide Squad (2016)

Rick Flag is far from wrong when he called Floyd Lawton a serial killer who takes credit cards. However, there is more complexity to Deadshot than that: he refuses to kill women or children and he doesn't exactly enjoy his job, even though he puts on a front of a heartless killer.

All he wants is to protect and be with his daughter. It's his daughter who keeps him from becoming like Deathstroke and is why he was willing to potentially sacrifice his life to save the universe in David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

16 Black Adam

Dwayne Johnson as Teth Adam hovering above the city in Black Adam (2022)

There is no doubt that Dwayne Johnson's newest addition to the DCEU begins as a brutal anti-hero who cares only about revenge. Even by the end of Black Adam, the titular character is not exactly a superhero, but he is not the evil tyrant of Kahndaq that some may expect him to become.

Instead, his time fighting against and with the Justice Society sends him on a character arc that humbles him. However, he still has a darkness to him since the post-credit scene of Black Adam showcases that he has no qualms facing off with powerful members of the Justice League.

15 Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn surrounded by petals in The Suicide Squad (2021)

Across a trilogy of movies in the DCEU, Harley Quinn has only been shown as the anti-hero. That's because extended time away from the Joker has allowed her to embrace the good side of her which mixed with the skills she's obtained as a supervillain make her an impressive hero.

She's fought armies of undead warriors, taken on Black Mask's forces, and helped kill an alien kaiju. Even though Harley is mostly just having fun along the way, audiences can see the Harleen side of the character come through and truly fight for what's right.

14 Atom Smasher

Atom Smasher running through Kahndaq in giant form in Black Adam (2022)

The nephew of the original Atom Smasher, this newest recruit of the Justice Society is not a perfect hero, and that kind of makes him endearing. He makes mistakes, even to the point of hindering other heroes such as Hawkman. In the prequel tie-in comic, Atom Smasher nearly failed and got himself killed on a solo mission.

However, Atom Smasher never lets his mistakes bring him down. He's still willing to take on Black Adam, Intergang, and Sabbac without hesitation. There is a lot of room for Atom Smasher to develop as a character in either his own or Justice Society spin-off.

13 Cyclone

Cyclone in full costume, and mid-spin in Black Adam (2022)

Introduced as a newer member of the Justice Society, Cyclone is unafraid to fly right into battle to fight a powerful being like Black Adam. In the prequel comic, Cyclone risked exposure of herself to save innocent lives, even if it did result in her being ridiculed.

Similar to Atom Smasher, Cyclone is far from the focus of the movie, but she demonstrates her willingness to fight evil without hesitation. It's clear that the DCEU is setting up plenty of room for the members of the Justice Society to grow in future projects.

12 Ratcatcher II

Ratcatcher 2 in tears as she commands an army of rats in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021)

Of all the members of Task Force X in The Suicide Squad, Ratcatcher belonged on the team the least since she was anything but a supervillain. She was a girl of poverty who was fortunate and unfortunate to be the daughter of the original Ratcatcher.

Cleo Cazo was forced into criminal life due to circumstances out of her control. As a squad member, all she did was befriend everyone even the crass and despicable Peacemaker. In the end, she was the most heroic of Task Force X since she summoned legions of rats to swarm and devour Starro. If anything, Ratcatcher II deserves to be recognized as a genuine superhero.

11 Rick Flag

Rick Flag standing up to Peacemaker in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021)

Though he is often treated as a puppet of Amanda Waller, Rick Flag in both Suicide Squad films is always willing to do the right thing. He didn't even like the idea of a team of villains saving the day, to begin with. In the end, though, he was able to lead the team and always find a way to save the world that benefited neither the villain nor Waller.

Rick Flag's heroism was also his downfall in The Suicide Squad when his altruistic views led him to become an enemy of Peacemaker. His death at the hands of his own teammate was tragic, but his sacrifice to stop Waller from winning is what inspires the squad to rise up and become Earth's defenders.

10 Black Canary

Black Canary unleashing her Canary Cry in Harley Quinn Birds Of Prey (2020)

Reluctant to be a hero after her mother was killed for being one, Black Canary did rise to the occasion when a young girl's life was at stake. She even protected someone like Harley Quinn from being taken advantage of by local Gothamite scumbags.

Across the runtime of Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey, the audience sees Dinah Lance slowly evolve from a singer trying to keep a low profile to one of the DC universe's best vigilantes. When she finally emits that famous Canary Cry, it's easy to see why she was the first Bird Of Prey to get her own spin-off announced.

9 Shazam

Shazam confronting Dr. Sivana in the sky in Shazam (2019)

In a bit of a different take from the comics, Billy Batson in 2019's Shazam! actually begins as not that likable or heroic. He's selfish and arrogant because of the loss of his mother, so when he first becomes Shazam, he's barely a crime fighter and even has people pay him to entertain with his powers.

That changes once Dr. Sivana enters Billy's story and the young boy grows up a bit after meeting his real mother who turns out to be a neglectful woman who abandoned him. He gains a new family with his foster brothers and sisters, and he's willing to protect them as well as give them the same power as Shazam.

8 Aquaman

Aquaman sitting on his throne in The Lost Kingdom

Audiences were first introduced to Arthur Curry as the Aquaman in Zack Snyder's Justice League where he was a bit of a lost soul protecting the innocent but wanted nothing to do with the world itself, but he still became a Justice League member to stop both Steppenwolf and Darkseid.

In James Wan's Aquaman, fans got to see Arthur fully become the true Aquaman and king of the oceans as he accepted who he was as a hero of the land and sea, willing to fight his own brother to protect the lands he loved with even more room to grow as a character in Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.

7 Batman

Batman standing on a gargoyle with lightning flashing behind him in Zack Snyder's Justice League

Bruce Wayne is not the typical superhero: not only does he not have powers but his sense of justice comes from his endless rage. In the DCEU, Batman began as this traumatized veteran vigilante that had lost his way and even broke his no-killing rule as well as wanted to murder Superman out of fear.

Superman's sacrifice in Batman V Superman ended up changing Batman, sending him on a path back to becoming a true Gotham Knight again who was willing to put together the League and be the protector of Earth that Superman was and by the end of Zack Snyder's Justice League, Batman had fully become the true Batman once again.

6 Hawkman

Hawkman talking while wearing his suit in Black Adam (2022)

Rash and hot-headed but truly believes in what the Justice Society stands for, Aldis Hodge's take on Hawkman is the perfect partner of Doctor Fate as a team leader for the Justice Society. Where Fate is calm, collected, and more of a user of words before brawn, Hawkman is the more action-oriented hero.

That's not to say that he's a meathead, Hawkman is still a leader who understandably does not trust Black Adam once he was resurrected in the modern-day. He's a strong warrior who fights for what's right and never gives up, but he's still willing to put his Nth metal mace down and use his words.
