Warning: This post contains spoilers for M3GAN

M3GAN may be a horror film, but it will also be remembered for the meme-worthy singing and dance sequences it spawned. Part of M3GAN’s wildly successful run at the box office is due to the film’s marketing team, which helped to usher in a plethora of viral moments, including memes, TikTok videos, and a M3GAN dance troupe that made appearances at multiple events leading up to the film’s theatrical release in the U.S.

M3GAN does what most horror movie dolls don’t do — she sings, dances, and sometimes does both while killing anyone standing in her way. When Allison Williams' Gemma created M3GAN, she wasn’t expecting her to go off the deep end, but the AI doll provided the audience with some entertaining moments by doing so. One of the most unexpected moments in M3GAN occurred when she sang “Titanium” to Cady, Gemma’s niece, to ease her nightmares. But that wasn’t the only musical number in the film, as the horror flick included an iconic viral moment that saw M3GAN dancing in the hallway to distract her opponent before going in for the kill.

“Furzeez” by Madison Davey and Väärin - “Furzeez” is the catchy tune and ad for Funki’s toy company competitors, and it plays shortly before David finds out Gemma has been working on M3GAN instead of making Purrpetual Petz as affordable as Furzees so Funki could compete.

“Not Your Hero” by Emanuel Vo Williams and Cut One - Perhaps one of the least memorable songs in M3GAN, “Not Your Hero” plays on the radio while Cady watches TV after Gemma tells her she has to work.

“Tell Me Your Dreams” by Anthony Willis & Jenna Davis - “Tell Me Your Dreams” is performed by M3GAN in one of the more heart-wrenching scenes of the horror film. Cady is breaking down crying because she misses her parents, and M3GAN begins to sing to soothe her and remind her that she is never alone.

m3gan singing

M3GAN’s singing and dancing is one of the best and most memorable aspects of the horror film. It really resonates with audiences because it’s so unexpected and wildly fun — the singing and dancing moments are campy, and it feels like the audience is in on the joke. What’s more, M3GAN’s dance moves seem built for TikTok, which speaks to Gen Z and makes the AI doll relatable — a viral social media icon who is cool enough to influence and entertain. It also helps that M3GAN looks very human. M3GAN’s singing and dancing is also an interesting way to exact revenge or turn up the creepy factor. No one is doing it like her.

After all, M3GAN singing “Titanium” was meant to soothe Cady as much as it was to make Gemma feel threatened. M3GAN’s killer dance moves, and abrupt melodic moments took audiences by surprise, and they latched on because the AI doll’s talents are a marvel in the horror genre, as well as an exciting talking point. M3GAN is a trend-setter, capable of capturing and holding attention with a well-placed sway, cartwheel, or foot pop. The killer doll turns heads, and her singing and dancing is a crucial part of that. Chucky and Annabelle may be scary in their own right, but M3GAN has a generational appeal that gives her a leg up.
