When Gilmore Girls premiered in 2000, fans enjoyed the dynamic between Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). They didn't get on each other's nerves or yell and Rory didn't lie about where she was going and then stay out way past curfew. The characters loved each other and were good friends. But even though this is the main relationship on the show, it would be strange if Rory and Lorelai only hung out with each other, so they each have some close friends who help them get through life.

Rory has many flaws as a friend but she and her mother have some friendships that last the entirety of the series. It's not always easy to be someone's pal, and these characters know that all too well, as some pairs get along better than others.

Lorelai And Michel

Michel (Yanic Truesdale) says hilarious things all the time, and it's easy to feel bad for him because Lorelai doesn't always treat him well.

Even though these two characters are supposed to be good friends, as they've worked together for years and almost seem more like family, it's hard to think that they're really all that close. Lorelai often ignores Michel in favor of Sookie, and Michel even tells her that he doesn't feel like she cherishes their friendship enough.

Madeline And Louise

Rory meets Madeline (Shelly Cole) and Louise (Teal Redmann) at Chilton and she's definitely intimidated by them. They're the type of teen drama characters who wouldn't make nice pals as they're selfish and materialistic.

These two aren't very kind to Paris, who needs a friend more than any other character on the show, and they aren't all that nice to each other, either. Madeline and Louise have one of the worst friendships on Gilmore Girls because they're not there for each other and their lives only revolve around dates and clothes.

Rory And Marty

It's awkward watching Rory hang out with Marty (Wayne Wilcox) at Yale, as he's hopelessly in love with her and she either doesn't know or would rather not admit that information.

Rory and Marty have a terrible friendship because she takes advantage of his kindness. And even worse, it's a friendship that involves a lie, as they act like they haven't met before when Rory realizes that Marty's girlfriend Lucy (Krysten Ritter) is her new friend.

Luke And Kirk

Kirk and Luke talking on Gilmore Girls

Luke (Scott Patterson) may be the biggest grump in Stars Hollow, despite the fact that he runs a charming diner that keeps the residents in coffee and burgers and donuts. Even so, he and Kirk (Sean Gunn) end up in a friendship, maybe from proximity, but it's one of the more entertaining ones on the show.

Kirk has many random odd jobs and he also asks Luke a lot of questions about life and seems to want to be around him a lot. These two might not be grabbing beers and hanging out for real, but they do spend time together.

Lorelai And Kirk

Kirk and Lorelai in Gilmore Girls

Lorelai might not say that Kirk is her best friend in the world, but it's hard to say that these two aren't pals after seeing them spend so much time together over the years.

Lorelai is like a mom to Kirk sometimes, taking care of him and giving him words of wisdom, and Kirk definitely acts like a child, complaining quite a lot. It works for them, though, and they're very cute together.

Lorelai And Babette

Lorelai and Babette (Sally Struthers) have a really sweet friendship. They've gotten to know each other pretty well over the years since they're neighbors, and in the first season, they share a sweet, moving moment.

When Babette loses her beloved cat, she worries that she'll lose her husband Morey (Ted Rooney) as well, and Lorelai helps her through this tough moment. Babette always calls Lorelai "Sugar," which is truly adorable.

Babette And Miss Patty

Babette and Miss Patty (Liz Torres) have a beautiful friendship that will put a smile on anyone's face. There are many GG supporting characters whom fans dislike but everyone loves these two.

These characters hang out all the time, gossiping in the middle of town or going to Luke's for a meal. They seem to really enjoy each other's company and it's sweet to watch.

Rory And Paris

Liza Weil is great as strong, independent Paris Geller, a character with some awkward storylines. She and Rory seem like they will never like each other and yet they end up becoming good friends.

Rory helps Paris feel like people care about her, and Paris teaches Rory to be more confident. They both inspire each other to go after their dreams and they're also pretty hilarious to watch since they're both so intelligent.

Lorelai And Sookie

Melissa McCarthy's Gilmore Girls character Sookie can be a jerk and Lorelai can be self-involved, too. That's actually a good thing as these characters feel human and relatable.

Lorelai and Sookie have one of the better friendships on the series because they make mistakes and hurt each other's feelings sometimes, but they always find their way back to each other. They become business owners together and experience all of the ups and downs of life as Sookie gets married and starts a family and Lorelai struggles with her own love life.

Rory And Lane

Rory and Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) definitely have the best friendship on Gilmore Girls.

Sure, they have some problems over the years, which just proves that they're easy to relate to. Rory doesn't realize that she leaves Lane out of her life when she starts dating Dean (Jared Padalecki), and they don't always find enough time to hang out as their lives get busier. Everyone goes through these bumps in the road with a best friend, and at the end of the day, these two care about each other and love spending time together.
