As part of the celebration of Mario's 35th anniversary, Nintendo has just released a new collectible handheld game that doubles as a clock, the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch. The game has the same vintage feel as the NES classic that launched a monumentally successful franchise. Besides telling the time, the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch comes with playable versions of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2, a mini-game, and tons of Easter eggs, references, and secrets. Players will use the NES-style controls to relive their favorite moments from the classic titles.

Nothing about the two included games has changed, but the new system includes several secrets players can find and enjoy. While many players have said they want to keep their Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch sealed in its box as a collector's item, it may be worth bringing it out to experience some of its hidden features. Here's every secret in the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch.

Every Secret in Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch

Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels

Most of the secrets and Easter eggs in the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch handheld are part of the clock interface. At certain times during the day or night, players will see various Easter eggs and cameos play over the clock. There are 35 unique ones to explore. Some notable ones include:

  • Yoshis helping Mario change the time at every hour.
  • Mario jumping on the flag at noon and meeting Toad, then jumping on the flag and finding Princess Peach at midnight.
  • Special characters including Bloopers, Cheep Cheeps, and Shy Guys at 1:11, 2:22, 3:33, and 4:44.
  • Beanstalks appearing at 1:23 and 4:56.
  • A Monty Mole cameo between 7 and 8.
  • Different enemy cameos throughout each hour.
  • Luigi replacing Mario from 9 until 10 each night.
  • Mario facing Bowser at 9:13 a.m. and p.m.

Players will want to watch the clock at various times to catch every possible animation.

Players can control some of the animations on the clock as well. For example, if they want to drop more Koopa Troopas onto the stage below the clock and have Mario jump on them, they can press the A and B buttons. They will get green Koopa Troopas from 0-40 seconds every minute, and red Koopa Troopas from 40-59 seconds every minute.

When playing Super Mario Bros., players will unlock hard mode with new enemy appearances. Hard mode will remain available once players have beaten the game once on the system, whereas in the classic version of the game, once the console was turned off, hard mode would disappear until after the player beat the main game again.

It is also possible to select the world to play in on the Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 2 title screens after the player has beaten the game once already without cheating. While the default will begin at world 1-1, tapping the B button will raise the stage to 2-1. Tapping the B button multiple times will let the player choose their world all the way up to world 8.

Players can unlock unlimited lives as a hidden feature of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. To do this, they will need to hold down the A button while on the title screen.

In the Ball mini-game, players will experience the game as Mario by default. They can switch to Luigi by holding down the A button on the mini-game's title screen. If players unplug the game on the Ball mini-game screen or the title screen of either of the Super Mario Bros. games and wait for three minutes, they will see one of two classic still images appear.

Finally, while on the clock screen, players can hold down A for five seconds to be taken to a new screen. Here, the Mario drawing song will play and teach players how to draw the classic plumber.
