With there being so many things from the game that the movies couldn’t adaptMetal Gear Solid and its sequels are such incredible video games, as they are the absolute gold standard of stealth in gaming. However, with the many spin-offs in the Metal Gear series, the gameplay has expanded to include turn-based RPGs, survival horrors, and even straight-up action-packed slash-em-ups.

As the gameplay styles of the spin-offs are so varied, and as they span so many different platforms, it’s hard to keep them consistent. But thanks to series creator Hideo Kojima being at the helm for most of them, the quality of the spin-offs are surprisingly unwavering.

Metal Gear Acid (2004)

Snake against guards in Metal Gear Acid

Being the very first Metal Gear game on the PSP and one of the very first games for the portable console, developers hadn’t completely figured out how to maximize the potential of the console, which might have something to with why Metal Gear Acid is a turn-based collectible card game. But it isn’t quite as simple as that, as there are some fun and challenging RPG aspects to it, and the storyline surprisingly delivers just as one of the games in the main series would.

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (2000)

Metal Gear solid Ghost Babel

Being released all the way back in 2000, Ghost Babel is the only Metal Gear game for the Game Boy Color. The game is a portable version of the original game, but it’s actually set in an alternate continuity based years after the events of the first game. Though it might not be taken seriously due to the platform it was released on, with Metal Gear being one of the video games movies currently in production, Babel has one of the best narratives and it could be considered for the plot of the movie.

Metal Gear Survive (2018)

Metal Gear Survive

Metal Gear Survive is an outlier in the Metal Gear series, as it’s more of a horror survival game, which is why Dawn of the Dead is one of the movies to watch if you like the Metal Gear franchise. With Survive being the first made without Kojima’s input, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the worst Metal Gear affiliated games.

However, the game is disliked by many for this very reason, as it isn’t “Kojima’s vision,” but the Metal Gear creator always had the very idea for a horror spin-off of the game with Nanomachine zombies. And as the survival elements of the gameplay takes cues from the beloved Metal Gear Solid 3, there are things to love about this spin-off.

Metal Gear Acid 2 (2005)

Metal Gear Acid 2

Metal Gear Acid 2 improves on its predecessor in every way possible, and coming a year later it sees Konami figuring out how to fully utilize the functions of the PlayStation Portable. It’s the first PSP game to feature 3D visuals, which makes the graphics really pop off the screen, especially with the art direction for the game being cell shaded. On top of that, there are more cards to collect and much more in-depth gameplay.

Metal Gear Online (2008)

Metal Gear Online

With the release of the incredible Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Konami released Metal Gear Online concurrently. Online is a multiplayer third-person shooter, which finds players in battle royales inside the maps of the fourth game. As the game didn’t run perfectly and it still contains elements of stealth, it may be a little too slow-paced for players of Call of Duty and Fortnite, but it was still insanely addictive.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (2006)

Snake fights another character in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Portable Ops is not only one of the best PSP games, but it’s one of the best Metal Gear games, period. It is the reason to buy a PSP, as it is one of the few games that ever lived up to what Sony promised the PSP could do, and it expertly transferred the gameplay mechanics of Metal Gear Solid on to the handheld device without losing any of its charm.

On top of that, as it follows the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the story is incredibly satisfying too, as the game delves deeper into the back story of many of the side characters.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013)

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Raiden Robot Dog

For the most part, the Metal Gear series spends most of its time with Solid Snake, a gruff and aging assassin whose stare alone would frighten a grown man, which is one of the reasons why Hugh Jackman would be one of the best actors to portray Solid Snake. However, being set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Revengeance sees players controlling Raiden, one of the best side characters in the series.

It’s an experience unlike any other game that has come before it in the series, as Revengeance puts aside the rigorous stealth missions for an action packed slash-em-up game where the players’ main weapon is a sword. Despite being such a departure from the main series, it was a fresh style of gameplay, and the epic storytelling was still maintained too. And on top of that, it features one of the best codec teams in an MGS game.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is better than any other spin-off of the series by a huge margin, as it saw the proper return of Solid Snake and had a typically world-dominating narrative that expanded the world of Metal Gear. For a PSP game, players can get up to 60 hours worth of game time from Peace Walker, which is way more than most games even released today. Peace Walker was so incredible for its time that fans were more than willing to call the PSP only game Metal Gear Solid 5.
