Clue is a murder mystery movie based on the board game of the same name, but while there can only be one murderer, almost every character is revealed to be a killer through several alternate endings. The 1985 movie is beloved for the characters' campiness, its cast of recognizable character actors, including Christopher Lloyd and Tim Curry, and the intentionally over-the-top acting. Clue follows a group of government workers, doctors, and scientists who are invited to dinner by a mystery host, and when that host is murdered, it's up to the guests to figure out not only who did it but also why they were all invited.

Available To Stream On Paramount+

When Clue was released, three separate versions of the movie were sent to theaters, each with a different ending. Now, the definitive version of Clue features all three multiple endings. The first ending follows the title card "How It Might Have Happened," the second follows the title card "How About This," and the third follows the title "Here's What Really Happened," and they all have different killers. The movie has an ensemble cast, and there are only a few characters who aren't a murderer in any of the timelines. They can be deduced by a process of elimination using this list of every killer in Clue.

Miss Scarlet

Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren) killed most of the victims in the first Clue ending, including Mr. Boddy, Yvette, and the police officer. Most of the murders were collateral damage, as Miss Scarlet simply needed to cover her tracks. She killed Boddy because he knew about her underground Washington D.C. brothel and was blackmailing her. She then planned to sell the guests' secrets to her powerful D.C. clients. But just as the similar Glass Onion's killer reveal is too simple, this was the most obvious of all the possibilities. In the third ending, she also kills the police officer with the lead pipe because he knew about her brothel.

Yvette

The guests together in the 1985 movie Clue

Yvette (Colleen Camp) is the maid of the Clue mansion, but she also worked as a call girl at Miss Scarlet's underground brothel and was Mrs. White's husband's mistress. However, while she had a sordid past and seemed up to no good when listening to the recording of the guests in the billiards room, she wasn't actually a cold-blooded killer, nor did she have any kind of ulterior motive, unlike the guests. Miss Scarlett demanded Yvette do her dirty work in the first ending, as she murdered the cook with a knife, then shot Mr. Boddy with the revolver before she was killed by Miss Scarlet herself.

Mrs. Peacock

Murder mystery shows and movies seemingly try to outdo each other, as Bad Seeds flips the oldest murder mystery trope on its head. But Clue did it first with the novelty of multiple endings and different killers. The movie's first alternate ending pulls the "person you'd least suspect" card, revealing that Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), the elderly lady who could barely raise the lead pipe above her head, is not only one of the killers but the only killer. As she's the wife of a U.S. senator, Mrs. Peacock mercilessly murders every single victim in the first alternate ending to conceal the fact that she took bribes from foreign powers.

Colonel Mustard

The second of the alternate endings in Clue is just like the twist ending of Murder on the Orient Express, as there are several murderers. Mr. Boddy has been blackmailing Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull) over his dark secret: he was a war profiteer, selling plane parts on the black market. Though he's a colonel, he's one of the most sheepish characters, and it seemed unlikely he would murder anyone unless they could identify him. It's revealed that the motorist who entered the mansion was Mustard's driver during World War II, and that's why the colonel bludgeons him with the wrench.

Wadsworth

The third Clue ending drastically changes Wadsworth (Tim Curry). He was an undercover FBI agent in the first two endings, but the third version reveals he's the evil mastermind who's really blackmailing the guests. He still only kills one person in this timeline: the singing telegram girl, who was Professor Plum's patient and mistress. Wadsworth kills her because she's another informant who could foil his whole plan. Though it's not Tim Curry's personal favorite role, Wadsworth/Boddy is still one of the actor's most iconic characters, and only he could have portrayed the many outrageous sides of the movie's eccentric butler/blackmailer.

Mrs. White

A lot of people wanted Yvette dead. She was killed by Miss Scarlet in Clue's first ending and then by Mrs. Peacock in the second ending, while Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) got her revenge on the maid and former call girl in the movie's final ending. The stereotypically French-accented Yvette had had an affair with Mrs. White's husband, so Mrs. White strangled her in the billiard room with the rope. Though Mrs. White was actually one of the least murderous members of the Clue ensemble, it's revealed that she also previously killed her husband after finding out about his affairs.

Professor Plum

Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd, who is best known for playing Doc in Back to the Future) is responsible for the main murder of Mr. Boddy in Clue, but it took him two attempts. After first missing Mr. Boddy when he shot the revolver, Professor Plum hits the man over the head with the candlestick, and Boddy dies from blunt force trauma. Professor Plum killed Boddy to keep the secret that he lost his medical license, due to his affairs with patients, from getting out. However, it's revealed that Wadsworth is the real Mr. Boddy and that Professor Plum really killed the butler, who was impersonating Boddy.

Mr. Green

Mr Green looking at a pipe in Clue

Michael McKean (who is now best known for playing the stoic lawyer Chuck McGill in Better Call Saul) plays Mr. Green in Clue. The character is the only dinner guest who hasn't done anything wrong or corrupt, but his sexuality could cost him his State Department job. The character doesn't commit murder until the movie's very closing moments when he shoots the real Mr. Boddy and reveals himself to be an FBI agent. However, while the one constant in Clue is that Mr. Green is innocent, this murder wasn't remotely in self-defense, as Wadsworth/Boddy simply stated that he'd continue blackmailing those who weren't dead.
