EverQuest developer Darkpaw Games has announced its 28th expansion, Terror of Luclin. The long-running MMORPG was originally released by Verant Interactive and Sony Online Entertainment way back in 1999 and became the first commercially successful 3D MMORPG. Since then, the game has gone on to release over two dozen expansions, and its continued development is currently in the hands of Darkpaw Games, one of the three branches spawned from Daybreak Games’ internal restructuring last year.

Interestingly, EverQuest isn’t the only long-running MMO Daybreak Games has under its belt. The two other branches it assembled last year, Dimensional Ink Games and Rogue Planet, currently work on DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2, respectively. While DC Universe Online has been around for 10 years now, with the studio targeting another decade of new content for it, PlanetSide 2 is a year shy of its own 10-year milestone. With how many MMORPGs have gone under over the last decade, it’s impressive to see Daybreak Games’ roster of titles still alive and kicking.

Darkpaw Games has announced that EverQuest: Terror of Luclin, the game’s 28th expansion, is now available for preorder. As its name suggests, the new expansion will bring players back to the continent of Luclin to not only stop the expansion of the Akheva but to also track down and thwart the vampire lord Mayong Mistmoore and his plans. Terror of Luclin brings the game’s level cap up to 120 and introduces an array of new spells and combat abilities, as well as over 700 new AAs for players to choose from. The expansion will also introduce seven new zones for players to explore as well as new raids, questlines, and missions to experience.

EverQuest: Terror of Luclin is already available for preorder and those that do will gain access to the game’s beta as well as the Shadow Weapon Ornament in-game item. The expansion is available in Collector’s, Premium, and Family & Friends Editions, each one offering its own set of in-game bonus items. They are priced at $69.99, $139.99, and $249.99 USD, respectively. Darkpaw has yet to announce when the new expansion will be released.

While it isn’t as popular and successful as it once was, the influence and legacy of EverQuest can still be seen all across the genre up to this day. The game was one of the inspirations for World of Warcraft, one of the most successful MMORPGs ever made, and just last year Blizzard Entertainment hired ex-EverQuest producer Holly Longdale to work with the World of Warcraft Classic team.

It’s incredibly surprising and impressive how EverQuest is still getting updated and getting new content to this day. The game's continued support shows the dedication not only of its development team but of its fans. It would definitely be interesting to see it stand the test of time for another 10 years, especially considering the current landscape of the video game industry and community.
