Euphoria Season 3: Zendaya Will Return As Rue Bennett

HBO has renewed Euphoria season 3. Sam Levinson's raw, uninhibited teen drama premiered to overwhelming success on HBO in 2019. Zendaya leads and narrates Euphoria as Rue, with Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Angus Cloud, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith, Sydney Sweeney, Alexia Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, Storm Reid, Javon Walton, Austin Abrams, and Dominic Fike rounding out the ensemble. Beginning with season 1, Euphoria has explored the life of its main characters through various crises involving identity, sex, drugs, trauma, and abuse, and their stories continue in season 2, which began airing on HBO on January 9, 2022.

Apart from some criticism about excessive nudity and sexual content, Euphoria has managed to click with both critics and viewers thanks to its visually delightful cinematography, brilliantly evocative performances, and thoughtful handling of mature storylines. Euphoria season 2 has been more successful than its freshman iteration, with the premiere attracting 14 million viewers across all HBO platforms, which is more than double season 1's average audience. Considering the viewership success and the critical appreciation, a renewal was never a long shot for the series, although now, HBO has offered an official update.

On Friday, HBO announced that it has officially renewed Euphoria season 3. Although specifics about the new season are under wraps HBO executive Francesca Orsi believes that season 2 has elevated the show to a new level of boldness and unconventional storytelling, expressing her excitement in continuing with the show its and its seasoned talent cast and crew. Currently, there is no indication about when Euphoria season 3 would air, and if there would be any cast shake-ups going into the new season. Read what Orsi said of the renewal below.

Sam, Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of EUPHORIA have taken Season 2 to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart. We couldn’t be more honored to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into Season 3.“

Euphoria Season 2 Episode 3 Trailer

Apart from adoration from fans and critics, Euphoria has been making waves at the awards scene as well. In 2020, Zendaya broke records when she became the youngest woman to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. That year the series was also nominated at the British Academy Television Awards, as well as for the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. It's a safe bet that the show will also be competing at the upcoming Emmys, hopefully snagging nominations for its supporting cast now that each episode is more or less anchored to a central character.

While the news about season 3 is certainly thrilling, Euphoria season 2 still needs to resolve a lot of loose ends from season 1. This includes Jules' relationship with Nate, Gia's interest in drugs, Rue's relapse, and Nate's sexuality. Additionally, after the latest episode's explosive events, Euphoria season 2 still has yet to address Cal's breakdown and develop his story further now that he is out of the closet. There are still a few episodes left before season 2 wraps up its eight-episode order meaning it's too early to predict how Euphoria season 3 would pick up things, but keeping with the show's signature style, audiences can expect the new season to be equally intrepid and unnerving.
