Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer at HBO, has commented on whether or not season 3 of Euphoria will be its last. The executive, who has overseen the production of many hit shows for the broadcaster, including The White Lotus, The Flight Attendant and I May Destroy You, previously stated that the drama has a relatively short shelf life. Euphoria, which deals with the lives and times of a group of troubled high-school students, has just been renewed for a third season.
A co-production between HBO and indie film darlings, A24, Euphoria has seen massive success among young audiences and drew 13.1 million viewers for its season 2 premiere in January. The show stars Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Zendaya, who also serves as the narrator, alongside Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer and Alexa Demie, who have all become household names, particularly among online audiences. On Twitter, Euphoria is the most engaged-with show with more than double the engagements of Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead. Part of the show’s appeal is its relatability, part of which stems with from the young age of the main cast, with the majority of them in their twenties. Bloys referenced this in his previous comments about the number of seasons that Euphoria may have, outlining that he wants young people to play young roles and that he doesn’t think the audience wants "30-year olds playing teenagers."
Now, Bloys has elaborated on whether or not Euphoria season 3 will in fact be its last. Speaking to TVLine, he explained that HBO is going to take a hands-off approach, trusting where the producers and cast want to take the characters. He explained that they will allow the creative team to "lead the way." Find the full quote below:
“I will let [exec producer] Sam [Levinson] and Zendaya talk about [that],” Bloys hedged to TVLine. “I’m very excited about what they’ve got planned [for Season 3]. So I will leave that to them. I will say, generally speaking, we trust where they want to take these characters. So we’ll let the creative team lead the way.”
Considering the positive reaction the show has garnered and the astronomic levels of hype that currently surround Zendaya, it would be foolish for HBO to outwardly state that they are limiting future seasons, as the actress' net worth has recently skyrocketed due to appearances in not only No Way Home but also in Denis Villeneuve’s mega blockbuster, Dune. It’s therefore unsurprising that Bloys mentions her as one of the key drivers behind whether or not they decide to pursue a third season, stating that "it’s hard to imagine doing the show without her," but maintaining that it would be something for her and the production team to discuss. Bloys was, however, quick to assure that Zendaya will be in the third season.
Time will tell whether or not Euphoria will get season 3. The hands-off approach is a welcome one in the oft-corporatized world of TV, but if the next season is as popular as this current one, there are sure to be some penny pushers at HBO clamoring to keep the money train rolling. In the meantime, there are still two episodes left to air in Euphoria season 2.
