The teaser trailer for Euphoria season 2 is here, revealing the first look at Zendaya's return as Rue Bennett. The past few years have been monumental for the former Shake It Up star's career. Her performance as the recovering drug addict in season 1 of Euphoria made Zendaya the youngest recipient of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This year, she has appeared in Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic Dune and will be reprising her role as MJ in the highly-anticipated MCU movie Spider-Man: No Way Home next month.

Euphoria premiered on HBO in the summer of 2019 and quickly caught on with audiences, especially younger viewers, for its brutally honest and boundary-pushing depiction of sex, drugs, relationships, and other pitfalls of teenage life. Created by Sam Levinson and based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name, season 1 of Euphoria found Rue befriending a new transgender girl at school named Jules (Hunter Schafer) as they both struggle to find their places in the world. The show's supporting characters are played by Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Storm Reid, Sydney Sweeney, and Colman Domingo.

Now, the first look at Zendaya's return as Rue is here in a trailer for Euphoria season 2. Set to the tune of Frank Sinatra's "Call Me Irresponsible," the teaser opens with Rue gleefully singing and dancing around her room before the trailer (and song) drastically changes tone, highlighting the various misadventures the teens get up to in the show. The trailer also announces a January 9 premiere date for season 2 on HBO. Watch the new trailer below:

Euphoria season 2 is set to pick up after the two special episodes that Levinson produced with limited cast and locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one focusing on Zendaya's Rue and the other on Schafer's Jules. The two characters abandoned each other during the final moments of season 1 and the subsequent special episodes provided a window into how they were coping with the fallout. The new trailer includes a brief button scene as Rue appears to be high in front of her sister, Gia (Reid), indicating she is still struggling with addiction.

Levinson previously teased that Euphoria season 2 will be "brutal," and based on the new trailer, it appears the show could very well deliver on that promise, showing various glimpses of violence. The pandemic has pushed the second season of HBO's acclaimed series back further than anyone could have expected, though fans can rest easy now knowing that Euphoria will return early next year.
