Angus Cloud, who plays Fez on HBO’s Euphoria, reveals Shrek is his favorite romantic comedy. Sam Levinson’s Euphoria centers on the darker side of Gen Z, following a group of high school students through their experiences with addiction, trauma, identity, and sex (among other things). Following the show’s debut in 2019, its overwhelming popularity led to an almost immediate season 2 renewal. In addition to Cloud, Euphoria stars Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Jacob Elordi, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer, and Sydney Sweeney.

Earlier this month, Euphoria finally premiered its second season. The first episode saw Cloud’s college dropout/drug dealer, Fezco or "Fez," return in dramatic fashion. Originally, Fez was meant to die in Euphoria season 1. However, Cloud turned in a performance that supposedly convinced the showrunners to keep his character around. Now, Fez is one of Euphoria’s most beloved characters, and Cloud, four years after being discovered by a casting agent at a chicken-and-waffles restaurant in Brooklyn, is currently filming The Line, will appear next in Your Lucky Day, and, perhaps someday, a romantic comedy.

Speaking with Bustle, Angus Cloud addressed the viral, budding romance between Fez and Lexi Howard (Apatow) on Euphoria and answered unironic questions about rom-coms. When asked if he had a favorite rom-com, Cloud replied, “No, I don't. I don't really know any rom-coms off of the top of my head. Shrek?” Upon pondering the love story of Shrek and Princess Fiona, Cloud asserted “All right. That's my favorite rom-com, man.”

Shrek holds Princess Fiona's hand

Shrek is loosely based on William Steig's fairy tale book of the same name, following the titular ogre as he is tasked with rescuing a princess for a local lord in exchange for clearing his swamp of fairy tale creatures. Of course, Shrek falls in love with the princess along the way and they become the unlikeliest of couples. The subsequent franchise’s ensemble cast was led by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, with other notable stars including John Lithgow, Antonio Banderas, Conrad Vernon, and Cody Cameron. The Oscar-winning animated adventure/rom-com celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.

Fez and Lexi Aka "Lezco" could be the unconventional fairy tale within Euphoria. The two characters spent the majority of season 1 within Rue (Zendaya)’s orbit but never at the forefront of the series. Euphoria’s season 2 premiere put Rue’s drug dealer and level-headed childhood friend on a couch together. The pair had a delightfully awkward conversation right before Fez beat Nate (Elordi) half to death. Now, fans can’t stop talking about Euphoria’s unlikely, yet least problematic pairing. As for Shrek and Fiona, the fifth film in their franchise is currently in development with the original cast all expected to return and slated for a 2022 release.
