Ethan Hawke has shared his frustration in being unable to disclose Marvel secrets after his casting in Moon Knight, but admits to revealing some to his son. Hawke is confirmed to play the main antagonist in the imminent Disney+ series, which is slated to premiere in 2022. The upcoming Moon Knight will follow a slew of live-action series as part of the MCU's Phase 4, including Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter SoldierLoki and the recent Hawkeye.

Moon Knight was first introduced in 1975 by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, following Marc Spector on his journey to avenge the innocent after being resurrected from life by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Spector operates at night in a full white cape and suit, to alert incoming enemies of his arrival. The long-awaited adaptation of the mercenary vigilante will be played by Oscar Isaac and will feature six episodes in season 1. Moon Knight production began in late April 2021 in Budapest, with filming and production just wrapping up recently.

In an interview with Variety, Hawke shared that he found containing the news of his Marvel casting to himself "so difficult." Marvel Studios is known for its extreme secrecy around new projects, but Hawke capitulated and admitted that he disclosed the secret of his role (and other Marvel tidbits) to his son. According to Hawke, his son proved a resourceful advantage in understanding the backstory behind various characters within the MCU, since he's a big Marvel fan. Although Disney+ Day delivered the first look at Moon Knight, Hawke's specific role is currently unbeknownst to the public, with fans speculating that he could take on different villainous rivals, such as Dracula. Previously, Hawke mentioned his relief in joining the MCU through Moon Knight, as the relatively unknown hero allows him more creative freedom in portraying his covert title. Furthermore, fans can expect Moon Knight to be different from the classics and parallel to the themes of Marvel’s Daredevil series, as the teaser showcased similar brutal themes of violence and dark adversities as the Netflix show. Moreover, Marvel boss Kevin Feige announced that the show will explore serious topics, such as Spector's battles with dissociative identity disorder (DID) as per the original Moon Knight comic book storyline.

Given Marvel's penchant for extreme secrecy and the intense security that surrounds every new MCU project, it's understandable that Hawke felt the need to confide in someone about his Moon Knight casting. Hawke is by no means the first MCU newcomer to struggle with keeping things under wraps, but it seems that his son has proved a trustworthy confidant, since the actor's involvement in the series wasn't leaked ahead of time. With the introduction of a largely unknown hero like Moon Knight into the MCU, fan speculation and interest will only build ahead of the Moon Knight series' release, so it's comforting to know that Hawke has found a way to get Marvel's secrets off his chest while still keeping the big updates shrouded in mystery.
