The newly released Eternals trailer has Marvel fans hilariously choosing their own Avengers leaders. Expected to deviate from the previously established MCU norms, Eternals follows an ancient alien team of Celestials who have been living secretly on Earth for thousands of years and have helped shape the course of human history. This time, the Eternals must band together to protect Earth from the evil Deviants. Written and directed by recent Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, Eternals completed production just before the coronavirus pandemic. After a few delays, it is currently scheduled for a November 5th, 2021 release.

The first official Eternals footage was seen earlier this month. Marvel has now dropped the long-awaited teaser trailer, which provides a look at Marvel's ancient superhero team in full costume. The film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Angelina Jolie as Thena, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Ma Dong-seok as Gilgamesh, and Lia McHugh as Sprite. Released today, the film’s first teaser trailer poses the question of who might be the next leader of the Avengers.

After the trailer's title card, the Eternals are seen sitting around a dinner table as Lia McHugh’s Sprite asks, “So now that Captain Rogers and Iron Man are both gone, who do you think is going to lead the Avengers?” to which Richard Madden’s Ikaris replies, “I could lead them,” followed by laughter from the rest of the team. As this was one of the trailer’s only lighthearted moments, Marvel fans wasted no time sharing their own hilarious picks on social media. The most absurd choices ranged from Kermit, Dougie Jones from the Twin Peaks revival season, and Jack Black’s Fat Thor cosplay:

While many fans jumped on this opportunity to make funny memes, others took the question more seriously, sharing that they hope to see Sam Wilson’s Captain America or Captain Marvel as the next leader of the Avengers. The fact Sprite would ask this question indicates this scene is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, though Eternals is expected to span multiple millennia.

Marvel’s ancient superhero team is set to step out of the shadows in Eternals, and it remains to be seen what ramifications this will have on Marvel's already established team, the Avengers. Perhaps some later trailers for Eternals will provide more hints as to who the next leader of the Avengers will be.
