Warning: This article contains spoilers for Eternals.

The sneaky hints that Eternals threw at the MCU's version of classic mythology suggest that Gorr the God Butcher, the main villain of Thor: Love and Thunder, will have a slightly different revenge story in Phase 4. Eternals revealed a lot about the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the role of the Eternals' in the evolution of humankind over the last 7000 years and the plans of the Celestials' to use the Earth as an incubation chamber for a brand-new Celestial, Tiamut. Chloé Zhao's first MCU movie also alluded to the classical Olympian gods, suggesting that ancient mythology was at least partly inspired by the Eternals themselves.

In Marvel comics, the Eternals and the ancient Greek gods coexist on Earth. Zuras and the rest of the Eternals founded the city of Olympia near Mount Olympus and agreed to let the Olympians take credit for their godlike actions, aided by the fact that each Eternal had an oddly similar Greek counterpart. Therefore, the Olympians became a central part of the world's history and the Eternals enjoyed a private stay on Earth. Now, the MCU's Eternals has made a subtle but important change to this relationship, revealing that Olympia is a planet made up by the Celestials to give the Eternals a false sense of belonging, and most importantly, that myths like the fall of Icarus were based on the Eternals.

It seems that the real Olympians have been absent from Earth in the MCU, as the Eternals influence humankind throughout millennia without the company of any other godlike species. This could affect the plot of Thor: Love and Thunder, given that the entire motivation of Gorr the God Butcher is his sworn revenge at all the revered deities for not intervening when he most needed them. With the Eternals fully replacing the Greek gods, it's possible that Gorr will instead target characters like Sersi and Thena instead of Circe and Athena.

Ikaris in Eternals and Hercules in Marvel Comics

However, Russell Crowe has been confirmed to play Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, and of course, Thor and the Asgardians have existed for a long time in the MCU with almost no connection to the Eternals, apart from Kingo's mention of having met Thor when the Norse God of Thunder was a child. Thus, the existence of more ancient gods as we typically remember them is definitely not off the table. But besides Zeus and possibly Hercules, the Eternals’ heightened relevance as MCU deities means that they could end up in Gorr’s crosshairs.

This could also make Thor: Love and Thunder the first movie to directly acknowledge the events of Eternals. However Taika Waititi's upcoming Thor film chooses to explain the relationship between the Olympians and the Eternals, it makes total sense for Gorr the God Butcher to have a grudge against the Eternals and the Celestials. After all, the Celestials decide the fate of countless planets and all the living beings who inhabit them, which is precisely the type of arbitrary judgment that Gorr wants to end.
