Eternals' Rotten Tomatoes score has dropped to the lowest of any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a little over a week to go until Marvel Studios' next blockbuster hit theaters, Eternals has already had its world premiere on October 18 and since then, the press embargo has been lifted, allowing critics to publish their reviews and share their thoughts on writer/director Chloé Zhao's entry into the MCU. So far, they have been decidedly mixed.

The upcoming film is centered around an immortal alien race who were created by the Celestials and instructed to never interfere in human affairs unless the Deviants are involved.  But after the return of half the Earth's population in Avengers: Endgame provides the necessary energy for the Deviants to return, the Eternals must come out of hiding and band together to protect humanity from their evil counterparts. The titular superhero team is portrayed by Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

As more and more critics are putting out their reviews of Eternals, the film's score on Rotten Tomatoes has dipped to the lowest of any movie in the MCU. At the time of writing, Eternals is sitting at 65% with a total of 84 reviews. Though still fresh by the review aggregator's standards, this is one point lower than 2013's Thor: The Dark World, which previously held the record for the lowest score of any MCU movie.

Eternals Movie Reviews

When early reactions to Eternals began making their way onto social media, the film's critical outlook looked promising, as many were praising it as an epic, emotional, and unique MCU movie. However, the official reviews for Eternals have revealed that the critical response is much more divided than previously assumed, with some knocking its bloated runtime and overly complex plot. Though most agree that, for better or worse, Zhao has delivered a film that is unlike anything the MCU has seen to date.

Introducing new superheroes to the MCU is always tricky, especially ones that have been around for thousands of years. To provide the necessary expository information, Zhao opted to tell the story in two separate timelines à la The Godfather Part II, a huge deviation from Marvel's tried and true formula, which could be part of what is tripping critics up. Nevertheless, critical reactions rarely have a substantial effect on a movie's performance at the box office, especially the gigantic blockbusters that Marvel produces. So a low Rotten Tomatoes score likely won't prevent diehard MCU fans or general audiences from flocking to theaters to see Eternals on November 5.
