In Eternals, a character once rumored to be played by Peter Dinklage in Avengers: Infinity War was finally revealed in the MCU. Production for Infinity War began in 2017, and during that time, fan theories ran amuck. At the time, Dinklage's casting had been announced by Marvel, but the details surrounding his character were unknown. The most popular fan theory, though, was that he was playing none other than Pip the Troll.

Pip the Troll was a drunken alien with teleportation powers who appears in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline from Marvel Comics. When Dinklage was spotted getting a fresh haircut in New York City, fan speculation peaked. A photo leaked of the actor sporting a new look of long and wavy red hair, which was almost identical to that of Pip's in the comics. Soon after, fans became convinced that Pip might be Peter Dinklage's Infinity War character.

When Infinity War released, Dinklage was revealed not to be playing Pip, but Eitri the Dwarf, Thor's weapons forger. Eitri played an important role in the film, aiding Thor in the creation of his new weapon Stormbreaker, but fans would have to wait for Pip's MCU debut until 2021. In the post-credit scene for the November blockbuster Eternals, Pip stumbled on screen as a CGI character, but Patton Oswalt was the actor behind the voice role.

Patton Oswalt Pip the Troll MCU Eternals

In Eternals, Pip appeared on screen to introduce a new cosmic character Eros, played by Harry Styles. Eros and Pip haven't crossed over much in the comics, but the pair are certain to be quite the duo going forward in the MCU. It looks like the two have been traveling the cosmos together for a while now, as they banter about whether the full introduction is necessary. Although they only shared one scene, and Pip's CGI is not too great, Oswalt and Styles had noticeable chemistry, implying each is perfect for their respective role. Though Styles is a newcomer to the world of Marvel, it's important to note that Oswalt played various Koenig brothers on Agents of SHIELD.

Their introduction in Eternals has lots of implications for the future of the cosmic side of the MCU. Despite the many teases at the end of Eternals, a sequel has yet to be announced by Marvel. That said, the MCU isn't known for making one-and-done films, so it should be expected that the story of Eternals will continue in some fashion, whether in theaters or in a Disney+ series. Even if an Eternals 2 doesn't happen, though, Pip and Eros will almost certainly return in the future. It was revealed that Eternals almost had Harry Styles's Eros as a main character, and Marvel won't miss an opportunity to feature him again. One film that the duo could feature in is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which releases in 2023. Pip's main counterpart in the comics is Adam Warlock, who's being played by Will Poulter in the film.

In the Eternals credit scene, Eros looked at Thena, Druig, and Makkari and told them that their friends were in trouble, but only he knew how to find them. It seems it isn't a simple matter of if Pip and Eros return in the MCU, but when they return. The cosmic side of the MCU is growing faster than ever, and although Peter Dinklage didn't end up being the man behind Pip the Troll, expect to see Patton Oswalt's cosmic alien back on screen soon.
