Nate Moore, a producer on Marvel Studios' Eternals, explains the movie is more of a sci-fi film than a superhero story. The latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally being released on November 5 after having been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Marvel Studios had to shift their entire slate, taking 2020 off entirely. Once 2021 hit, Marvel came out swinging, releasing four shows and two movies so far this year. There is no sign of them slowing down, as the studio has many more theatrical and Disney+ show releases coming in the next few years.

The massive cast of the movie includes Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, Kit Harington, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Ma Dong-seok, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Angelina Jolie, and is helmed by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. Eternals follows a group of cosmic beings that were created by the Celestials. The Celestials are supremely powerful cosmic entities that give the Eternals their powers, as well as tasking them with defending humanity from the Deviants. Using their exciting and varied powers, the Eternals will have to protect Earth from the Deviants while also having to explain why they never got involved in events that shaped humanity.

Now, producer Nate Moore has talked about why Eternals is more of a sci-fi movie than a superhero movie. Screen Rant visited the set in January of 2020 on its last day of filming. There, SR and other outlets were able to interview some members of the cast and crew, and Moore was one of the members interviewed. He discusses how this upcoming MCU movie is more "hard sci-fi" than any of the other franchise films. Check out his full comment down below:

"I think a lot of times when we think about movies, we think about genres we haven't done and to do — to deal with immortality which I think is sort of a fun topic to deal with, but also doing a more hard sci-fi movie frankly with something we really hadn't tackled and to do something that didn't feel necessarily like a superhero movie. It's definitely a — again it's a comic book movie, it's an action movie, but it didn't feel like a superhero movie. It seemed to us like a good palate cleanser and a good restart as we looked at what was post-Avengers."

Having Eternals feel like a different genre than the rest of the MCU is definitely going to be exciting for Marvel fans. The latest MCU projects have had new tones and genres, such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings being a martial arts movie. While Marvel Studios has explored the cosmic side already with Guardians of the GalaxyEternals seems to put the sci-fi elements first over the superhero tropes. Given that the movie will take place over the course of thousands of years and details powerful celestial beings and their immersive worldbuilding, it makes sense that Moore considers it "hard sci-fi." The movie will still contain comic book elements but will give viewers a fresh experience.

Like Moore says, Eternals seems to be a sort of "palate cleanser" for the post-Endgame MCU. Many fans had been wondering how Marvel Studios could continue making movies after one of the biggest cinematic events in history. The answer seems to be taking lesser-known characters and creating new projects that detail their exciting origins. This post-Avengers MCU is exploring more characters, times, and locations than ever before, and Eternals is definitely going to lead that charge.
