One of the immortal and monstrous Deviant villains in the MCU's upcoming film, Eternals, is reportedly the size of an ocean liner. The adaptation of the comic book characters of the same name is the latest in a line of lesser-known Marvel properties to be offered a big-screen debut during the franchise's long-awaited Phase Four, helmed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao. The film is set to star Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkarai, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayak as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

The plot of the film is set to take place after the explosive events of Avengers: Endgame, showcasing the return of the Eternals' adversaries, the Deviants, their Celestial-made cousins and evil counterparts. In Eternals, the heroes will be forced to emerge from hiding and put themselves into the view of humans to stop the Deviants from destroying the planet. Whilst most of the Eternals have lived regular lives out of the public eye, some have also become public figures, such as Nanjiani's character, Kingo, who has become a famous Bollywood film star.

During a visit to the Eternals film set in January 2020, Screen Rant participated in a round-table interview with Marvel's Nate Moore, who serves as a producer for the Eternals. When speaking about the film's monstrous antagonists, Moore offered some details about their size and scale. The producer revealed that some of the Deviants are "as big as an ocean liner." Read his full comments below:

"And these are the Deviants the Eternals were sent again to eradicate to help people advance because the Deviants are the changing people that come in all different shapes and sizes, some are as small as a human some are as big as an ocean liner, which is a lot of fun for us to play with as we build set pieces and action."

Eternals Movie Cast Characters Lineup Header

Moore's comments line up with the Deviant's previous debut in the film's final trailer, showcasing a variety of their animalistic and more human appearances. It's possible that the film's Deviants could take inspiration from those of the Eternals Volume 3 comic, including the villains Gelt, Morjak, Dyzan, Kra and Ghiough. But while the Deviants have always been at the forefront as the perfect choice of antagonist for an Eternals film, there have also been other theories about what surprises the film could hold. Some fan theories have implied that the Eternals' creators, the Celestials, are the true antagonists, due to their apprehension about stepping into the public eye to protect Earth. Keoghan's character, Druig, has also been known to act on his own accord in the comic source material, and with his odd placements in the film's promotional trailers, fans have been quick to label him as the film's possible true villain behind the ever-changing Deviants.

With the variety in size and power of the Deviants' revealed, Eternals could feature simultaneously some of the largest and smallest fights in the MCU so far, particularly with such God-like titular characters. Alongside extremely strong action sequences, having such varying villains allows the character design of the film to shine on a huge scale, ranging from almost Lovecraft-esque monsters to more humanoid alien designs. Given the avid fan theories surrounding the film, it will be interesting to see whether the Deviants ultimately turn out to be the biggest threat Marvel's newest heroes face.
