Eternals boasts a long list of super-powered heroes, but which one of them is the most powerful? 10 members of the alien race about to be introduced into the MCU in Chloe Zhao's film, and in the comic books, they’re among the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe. Thus far, it’s apparent that the same will be true of their MCU counterparts.

Both of the Eternals trailers point toward these heroes being incredibly formidable, with Ikaris (Richard Madden) blasting cosmic rays from his eyes, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) running at super speed, Thena (Angelina Jolie) wielding a sword made out of energy, and more. It appears that just like the characters in the comics, the Eternals are immortal beings fueled by tremendous amounts of cosmic energy that they can channel for a variety of different purposes. The comic book versions of the characters have a shared set of powers, but at least some possess unique abilities.

The comics and what’s been shown from the trailers provide some clues about who most powerful of the 10 Eternals will be. If Marvel were simply going by the comics, this title would likely be shared by Don Lee's Gilgamesh and Gemma Chan’s Sersi, but that doesn’t appear to be the case, or at least not for the latter character. Sersi has the potential to be one of the most destructive forces on the planet in the comics, but comments from Chan about her character not being the “strongest” and not having the “most obviously impressive powers” indicate that Eternals is significantly diluting her capabilities. Gilgamesh, on the other hand, could remain unchanged. Some of the action in the final Eternals trailer shows him demonstrating super strength, which is what he’s primarily known for in the comics.

Gilgamesh and Thena training in Eternals

Since the Eternals come with multiple powers, some of them – including Gilgamesh – are comparable to Superman in terms of all the things they can do with their cosmic energy. Part of what makes Gilgamesh so dangerous in the comics is that not only does he have Thor-level strength, but he also has access to the standard Eternal abilities, such as flying, shooting cosmic rays from his eyes and his hands, and manipulating matter. Eternals could potentially take away some of these, but the energy around his arms in the final trailer for the Eternals movie is indicative of physical strength not being the only thing Gilgamesh brings to the table. Ikaris clearly has these powers too, but he’s lacking of the same level of raw power that Gilgamesh traditionally has.

If Marvel doesn’t water down Gilgamesh’s powers in Eternals, he could join the ranks of the MCU’s strongest characters. In the comics, he's such an impressive combatant that he pushed Thor to his limit and nearly beat him, despite being blind at the time. Thor considered him to be one of the greatest foes he had ever gone up against. If the MCU’s Gilgamesh is anything like the character he’s based on, his name could later be mentioned in the same breath as Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, and the Hulk (who he could likely go toe-to-toe with). With all his powers and immense strength, there's a chance Gilgamesh may even be able to take Thanos.
