Eternals introduced the title team and expanded a bit more on their creators, the Celestials, but after the big reveal of them not being the only ones in the universe, how many more Eternals (and Celestials) are in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Although the original Avengers line-up is no longer around, that doesn’t mean the MCU will be left without a superhero team, and Phase 4 has already introduced its first new team in Chloé Zhao’s Eternals.

The Eternals are an alien race created by the Celestial Arishem, who sent them to Earth to protect it from the Deviants, the Eternals’ evil counterparts. The team stayed on Earth waiting for Arishem to let them return “home”, and so they helped humanity progress, but they weren’t allowed to interfere in their conflicts, including Thanos’ snap. However, their whole mission and reason for their creation was a lie, and the truth created a lot of friction between them. As it turns out, there was no such thing as their home planet Olympia, and they were sent to Earth to make sure humanity met the prerequisites needed for the birth of another Celestial, Tiamut, and that event, referred to as “The Emergence”, was going to destroy Earth.

Following Ajak’s (Salma Hayek) death, Sersi (Gemma Chan) became the new leader of the Eternals and thus the one who could directly communicate with Arishem, and it was thanks to her that the rest of the team learned the truth. Tiamut was seeded within Earth and needed a certain amount of humans to awaken and come out, but his “birth” – or the Emergence – meant the destruction of Earth, but in turn, it would allow for the creation of new life and galaxies in other parts of the universe. Sersi also learned that they aren’t the only Eternals that have been created, and at the end of the movie, Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Druig (Barry Keoghan) left Earth on the Domo to look for more Eternals. The post-credits scene introduced another one: Eros (Harry Styles), Thanos’ brother, who knows where to find Sersi, Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) after they were abducted by Arishem.

However, exactly how many more Eternals are out there in the MCU is unknown, mostly as there are many of them in the comics. A Reddit user shared a group of graphics of all the Eternals that have appeared in Marvel Comics and they’re 50, though whether they all exist in the MCU is unknown, but many of them will surely show up at some point as the MCU continues to expand. As for Celestials, the MCU has already introduced Arishem, Ego (Kurt Russell), Knowhere (whose head is now a mining colony), Tiamut, and showed Eson, Jemiah, Nezarr, and Hargen in flashbacks. Now, as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Eternals, the Celestials are powerful enough to create more of their kind, and surely, Tiamut wasn’t the only one waiting to be born. In the comics, there are 35 known Celestials, so just like with the Eternals, more (if not all) will surely be introduced in the MCU’s near future.

With the Eternals’ story not over yet, the chances of more Celestials being introduced is high, and it’s to be seen how many more Eternals the current team will come across in the near future, and most importantly, which role they will all have in the MCU and its current issues, as is that of the multiverse and its upcoming chaos.
