Warning! Spoiler ahead for Eternals.

Marvel Studios' Eternals revolved around a new catastrophe called the Emergence, but the Avengers were nowhere to be found during the crisis — where were they? The MCU's latest superhero team has arrived through Chloé Zhao's movie. Created by the Celestials, the Eternals are almost immortal beings who are tasked to protect humanity from Deviants. Despite their power levels, however, they could've still used some help as they deal with the threat of the Emergence.

The Eternals have been on Earth for thousands of years. But, since they were not permitted to meddle with human tragedies unless it involved the Deviants, they kept to themselves and blended in. This was also the reason why they didn't interfere when Thanos (Josh Brolin) threatened the universe using the Infinity Stones. After operating as a unit for centuries, they decided to part ways; each Eternal went on to live different kinds of lives. Some of them kept in touch, but others lived in isolation. But, when Deviants re-emerge significantly evolved, the team was forced to re-assemble.

In Eternals, the first major Deviant attack happened in London. Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Sprite (Lia McHugh) were ambushed while they're on their way home from Dane Whitman's (Kit Harington) birthday bash. Totally caught off guard, they were lucky that Ikaris (Richard Madden) came just in time to help them. While they're able to escape the scene before the police arrived, the whole incident was covered in the news. Since then, much of the film's action set pieces took place in secluded areas, including the third-act battle. Still, the initial incident in a major global city should've alerted the Avengers and compelled them to find out what was happening, so why didn't they? For context, the events of Eternals take place eight months after Avengers: Endgame. This was around the same time as Spider-Man: Far From Home which revealed what some of the prominent MCU heroes were up to. Based on the 2019 Jon Watts film, both Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) were off-world. Meanwhile, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was unavailable. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was already dealing with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the Elemantals' ruse. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), on the other hand, could still be in her self-imposed isolation after WandaVision.

The Eternals stand together in a forest to face an unseen threat in Marvel's Eternals.

What's uncertain is the whereabouts of Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who should've already assumed the role of Captain America at this point. Based on MCU's timeline, the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier take place six months after Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps he's focused on his work in the States, alongside Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Rhodey/War Machine (Don Cheadle) is another hero whose activities are unknown during the time of Eternals' Emergence. Maybe, he's busy dealing with the issues he could face in Armor Wars, depending on where that show falls in the MCU timeline. It's worth noting that currently, it's still unclear what the official status of the Avengers is. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' post-credits scene revealed that heroes such as Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) are in constant contact with Wong (Benedict Wong), and by way, Doctor Strange. But since the Destin Cretton and Simu Liu film happened around the same time as Spider-Man: Far From Home and Eternals, it's possible that everyone was just too busy to get themselves involved with the Emergence, especially since nothing bad really came out of it.

As the MCU continues to expand, isolating stories from each other is getting much trickier. Phase 2 films such as Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier were hampered with the same questions, especially on the heels of Earth's Mightiest Heroes' first team-up in The Avengers. There hasn't been any official explanation regarding those queries. However, while they were able to get away with it, the same questions will keep on popping up beyond Eternals unless they explicitly reveal where the rest of the MCU heroes are during a standalone story.
