The cast of the upcoming MCU film Eternals, including stars Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden, was evacuated from their Canary Islands set after the discovery of an unexploded bomb.
Eternals, coming out on November 6, 2020, features an all-star cast and tells the stories of a group of immortal beings with extraordinary abilities. The film is expected to help kick off the MCU's Phase Four along with the release of the Black Widow prequel in May. Plot points are being kept tightly under wraps, but the ensemble cast was announced this past summer. In addition to Jolie and Madden, Eternals will star Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, and Don Lee.
The Sun reported on the bomb scare evacuation, writing that experts were brought in to handle the situation while the cast and crew were moved a safe distance away. The movie was shooting in the Canary Island of Fuerteventura when the bomb was discovered, and no one was harmed during the evacuation. The bomb was likely an old explosive dating back to World War II. During that time, the Nazis had a base on that same island. Therefore, this was not a calculated attack, and there will hopefully be no further cause for concern. Across Europe, unexploded bombs regularly cause evacuations, often during construction and agricultural operations.
The Sun spoke to an insider source who said, "It was obviously terrifying — the bomb could have been there for decades untouched but who knows what might have happened if it was disturbed. Some of the biggest stars in the world were on set and nobody was taking any chances. Fortunately, experts dealt with it." Representatives for Marvel and the cast have not given an official statement regarding what happened. Prior to this, little news has emerged from the production aside from fan photos catching glimpses of the set and some of the actors in costume. Ever since the official announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, fans have been eagerly anticipating the film and any kind of news regarding it.
Countless theories have popped up regarding the Eternals and what their role in the post-MCU will be. From a possible connection between them and the villains at the center of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to how they will impact the future X-Men, there are no shortage of ideas being shared on the Internet. Things are very much still up in the air and likely won't come into focus until next year, but its safe to say that expectations are high. With all the change-ups that occurred this year in the MCU, fans are looking for new heroes to fill in for those who have left, and the Eternals are sure to fit the bill. With almost exactly a year to go until Eternals is released, the excitement is sure to grow.
