Patton Oswalt has seemingly confirmed that Eternals 2 is a go. Eternals, which hit theaters on November 5, 2021, was the third film in Phase 4 of the MCU. It followed a group of immortal beings created by the Celestials who have helped guide the progress of humanity for thousands of years. The large ensemble cast included Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie, directed by Nomadland Oscar winner Chloé Zhao.

One of the most intriguing things about Eternals was the promise made by its post-credits sequence. After the Eternals have split up and one group has decided to roam the galaxy, a mysterious duo appears on their ship without warning. The troll Pip (Oswalt) comes bounding in, heralding the arrival of Thanos' brother, the eternal Eros (Harry Styles), who is also known as Starfox. Pip and Eros offer their services in helping the remaining Eternals save their team members, as they were taken by their creator Arishem for disobeying orders.

Earlier on Wednesday, The Today Show shared a short clip from an interview with Oswalt. The conversation is largely taken up by Oswalt explaining the end-credits scene of Eternals and the character he plays, but he takes a surprising turn at the end. He says, "They have announced there's going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it." Oswalt adds that he hopes the film will feature both Starfox and Pip. Harry Styles as Eros in Eternals

Although Eternals received a divisive reception from both critics and audiences, it still managed to double its budget worldwide, so a follow-up isn’t entirely out of the cards, though it was thought unlikely. What’s particularly strange about this announcement is the fact that, at the time of writing, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed a sequel to Eternals. While they announced a long list of films that will be appearing in the upcoming Phases 5 and 6 during their presentation recently at San Diego Comic-Con, an Eternals sequel was not among those films.

The fact that Eternals 2 wasn’t included during the announcement doesn’t mean it’s not happening, however. It has been officially confirmed that a sequel to last year's Shang-Chi is in development, and that movie did not appear on the schedule either. However, Eternals’ lack of official sequel confirmation, as well as the fact that Oswalt and Styles are clearly not yet signed on for the film yet, lends a shadow of doubt to Oswalt’s pronouncement. It could be that Oswalt has been a part of behind the scenes conversations, and that he got ahead of the announcement. Nevertheless, for more concrete news on Eternals 2, stay tuned for Marvel's response.
