Warning! Spoilers ahead for Eternals #12

At this point in the Marvel Universe, one has to wonder if the X-Men's decision to expand to Mars was worth it. While it solved the immediate problem of Krakoa's reunited sister island Arakko and where to put its warlike nation of mutants, the long-term consequences have been growing with every new issue involving mutantkind. Now, a new issue of Eternals has revealed a major threat to the paradise the X-Men have built, and it's all thanks to their decision to colonize Mars.

Terraforming the red planet and relocating the mutants of Arrako to form the first mutant world, the X-Men of Krakoa made major waves on Earth and in the greater cosmos. Not only did it incense human anti-mutant groups such as Orchis, which motivated them to increase their offensives, but the number of extraterrestrial attacks on Earth also increased as a direct response as well. However, the new Eternals #12 from Kieron Gillena and Esad Ribić has revealed a new danger that may very well end everything the X-Men have built on Krakoa.

In the new issue, the heroes of the Eternals have succeeded in defeating Thanos, who had taken over as the Prime Eternal. This is largely thanks to the conniving tactics of the master manipulator Druig, who has been serving the Mad Titan while secretly plotting against him. Now, Druig has become the Prime Eternal in the interim, enjoying his throne while knowing his people will need a new purpose to keep them unified under his rule. As such, the deceitful Eternal initiates a global scan for Deviants using a newly recovered database. Unfortunately, the scan identifies mutants as beings with traces of Deviant-derived DNA. Furthermore, Druig sees the Mars expansion as the perfect reason to go to war with the X-Men.

Druig-Learns-About-X-Men-on-Mars

Leading straight into Marvel's summer event Judgment Day where the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals will cross over for a major battle, this issue confirms Druig will be fueling the tensions between Eternals and the X-Men, no doubt convincing his people that the population on Mars needs to be eradicated as "excess deviation." Krakoa will likely retaliate in response, an act that could very well lead to untold destruction given the impressive powers and resurrection protocols featured on both sides. It's not a stretch to imagine the island nation becoming a casualty in the war to come (and all because the X-Men claimed Mars).

While the need to relocate a nation of war-mongering mutants who'd been freed from a dark dimension was pressing, one must ask if Mars was really the only free real estate? Terraforming the red planet was an impressive feat of several mutants using their powers in synch, but it's not as if it was the only option. The X-Men do have access to other, nicer dimensions Arrako could have been moved to, thereby eliminating all of these new consequences and threats that have come to light. In any case, the X-Men are about to face major heat from the Eternals in the issues to come thanks to their planetary colonization.
