It looks like The Elder Scrolls Online will be heading to Oblivion next year. In a short reveal trailer released during The Game Awards 2020, viewers were treated to a short clip involving a wood elf and a demonic being that appears to be Mehrunes Dagon. For now, details are pretty scarce on the newest ESO update, but here's what fans might expect to find when the new content releases.

In recent years, The Elder Scrolls Online has taken players through iconic realms like Morrowind and Daggerfall. Currently, ESO's "Dark Heart of Skyrim" content takes place in Skyrim and involves popular locations in that region, like the recent Markarth update. So, it logically makes sense The Elder Scrolls Online would take players to Oblivion at some point.

Oblivion, the world of the Daedra, was a huge part of The Elder Scrolls IV. The realm bears a lot of resemblances to hell, where demonic princes and devils live in realms of fire and torture. In fact, trailer for "Gates of Oblivion," the new update for The Elder Scrolls Online, plays with the theme of nightmares and hell a lot. By the end of ESO's new trailer, which only lasts around one minute, it appears that Mehrunes Dagon - the main antagonist from Elder Scrolls IV - has been summoned.

New Content Coming In ESO's Gates Of Oblivion Update

The reveal trailer from Bethesda doesn't show much beyond a book bearing the Oblivion rune and a Daedric Prince rising up from the flames. However, the elf's dreams show dungeons and scenery that look similar to the way the Oblivion realm looked in Elder Scrolls IV. Based on the title of the update, "The Gates of Oblivion," finding and closing Oblivion gates in The Elder Scrolls Online seems likely. It was a common mechanic in Elder Scrolls IV, and it could likely be repeated as dungeons or trials in ESO.

So far, the details are pretty scarce regarding the Oblivion update to Elder Scrolls Online. However, a global reveal event is slated for January 21st, 2021, starting at 5pm EST. Elder Scrolls IV remains a popular entry in the series, with mods still coming to the game in 2020. So, a lot of fans are probably happy to see Oblivion being the latest content to come to ESO. An official release date hasn't been announced yet, but one will hopefully be unveiled during Bethesda's reveal event in January. For now, though, "The Gates of Oblivion" content looks like a promising new update for The Elder Scrolls Online.
