Escape At Dannemora: Benicio Del Toro Goes BTS On Showtime’s Prison Break Drama

Benicio Del Toro and Paul Dano Escape at Dannemora

Showtime is ramping up the marketing for its new limited series Escape at Dannemora with a new behind-the-scenes look at the star-studded drama. As event series go, this one checks a lot of the necessary boxes, beginning with the cast, which features Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro and Patrica Arquettte, as well as Paul Dano. And what’s an event series without someone equally notable behind the camera? This time, it’s a bit of a surprise as Ben Stiller has directed all eight episodes of the real-life prison break drama.

The limited series is yet another example of what has been a string of interesting and smart acquisitions by Showtime in recent months. While the premium cabler did recently cancel I’m Dying Up Here, new additions, like Jim Carrey’s Kidding, plus the upcoming or planned series, like City on a Hill, from executive producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the legal drama Your Honor, topical late-night series Desus and Mero, and, of course, the planned Halo series easily fill that void. The network also has another limited series in the works, this one focused on the Roger Ailes drama at Fox News, which will star Naomi Watts.

Needless to say, Showtime has been quietly making waves recently, cleaning its slate and adding attractive new series to its catalog, with Escape at Dannemora quickly rising to the top of the most-anticipated list. Go behind the scenes of the event series and read a brief synopsis below:

“Del Toro plays convicted murderer Richard Matt, an artistic yet intimidating force within the prison, who masterminds the escape. Arquette plays Tilly Mitchell, a working class wife and mother who supervises the prison tailor shop and becomes sexually involved with both men, ultimately assisting them in their escape. Dano plays David Sweat, a convicted cop-killer who may have genuine feelings for Tilly and becomes a reluctant partner in Richard Matt’s plot.”

There’s a hint of Escape From Alcatraz in the plot mechanics here, which is never a bad thing. But Dannemora ultimately goes in a different direction, focusing (for obvious reasons) on what the escapees did in the aftermath of their daring prison break. In that sense, the appeal of Dannemora is as much about the anticipated interactions between Del Toro, Dano, and Arquette, as it is covering the ins and outs of two men breaking out of prison. At any rate, it looks as though this event series will make for an entertaining way to end 2018 on Showtime.
