The Equalizer 3 star Dakota Fanning opens up about reuniting with Denzel Washington after previously working with the actor almost twenty years ago. Expected to serve as the final installment in the franchise, The Equalizer 3 sees Washington's retired government operative, Robert McCall, living peacefully in Italy when he finds himself facing off against the mafia. The film, which is again directed by Antoine Fuqua, serves as a reunion for Washington and Fanning, who first worked together back in 2004 on director Tony Scott's Man on Fire.

Ahead of The Equalizer 3's release date this fall, Fanning speaks to ET about what it was like to work with Washington again after so many years. In addition to revealing more information about her character, who she describes as a "kind of low-level CIA agent" who McCall reaches out to, Fanning touches on how happy she was to be welcomed into the franchise. Check out Fanning's full comment or watch the interview below:

“It was the best. I think it's so rare to get to work with someone when you're nine years old and then work with them again when you're [in your 20s]. When that person is Denzel, it’s like a dream come true. I'm a fan of the first two films, so getting to join it and be a little part of it was really amazing.

How Dakota Fanning Could Factor Into The Equalizer 3

Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 3.

Fanning only appears briefly in The Equalizer 3 trailer, but her reveal that she is playing a CIA agent in the movie is a major hint about how she will factor into the story. What's more, McCall actually makes contact with her instead of the other way around, suggesting that he might not be quite as much of a lone wolf this time. Both the first and second Equalizer movies feature Washington's character working mostly on his own, but the upcoming threequel could potentially be giving him something of a sidekick.

Even if Fanning's character doesn't play a prominent role in the action, she could be a valuable source of information. Since she's working with the CIA, she presumably has far more resources at her disposal, which could help McCall in his fight against the Italian mafia. The trailer also briefly shows McCall being operated on after sustaining what could be a gunshot wound, and Fanning's character and her connections could come more into play when Washington's character is incapacitated.

In Man on Fire and every movie since Fanning has proven herself an exceptionally talented actor. It remains to be seen how prominently she will feature in The Equalizer 3, but it seems unlikely she would be brought on for just a more minor cameo. While many questions remain about The Equalizer 3, Fanning and Washington's reunion alone could be worth the price of admission.
