Epic is offering users unlimited $10 USD & £10 GBP (or equivalent in other currencies) discounts on the Epic Game Store all month long to celebrate the holidays. This is only one part of Epic’s month-long holiday gaming celebration, which includes offering up one free game a day for the next 15 days and plenty of discounts for titles like Far Cry 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The most recent of these free giveaways have included Shenmue III and Remnant: From The Ashes, with this promotional deal set to run until January 6.
This mirrors the Epic Game Store’s Holiday 2020 deals, which included free offerings like Alien: Isolation, Tropico 5, and Jurassic World Evolution. Epic also gave away limitless $10 coupons that replaced themselves after every purchase, allowing fans to save up on games costing up to $15 until the end of the year. This display of yuletide goodwill may not have helped the Epic Games Store with the projected $273 million in expenses it lost in 2020, but it apparently proved popular enough with customers that the online gaming retailer that Epic is bringing it back for the 2021 holiday season.
According to Video Games Chronicle, Epic launched a new “Epic Voucher” promotion, not unlike the one it ran this time last year. Just like in 2020, all users with an Epic Games Store account will be automatically granted a virtual voucher coupon for $10 (or £10), which can be used on any digital title worth up to $15. The twist is that this coupon is applied to every eligible game in the user’s cart, meaning that those who buy three titles in the required price range can save $30 for their purchase. Once this purchase is made, the user receives another $10 coupon to repeat the process - with the promotion lasting until January 6.
Over the past few years, Epic has built up a positive reputation for providing high-profile games for free, which was a boon for players when the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic left everyone stuck at home for months at a time. This trend continued into 2021, along with a new incentive that granted users who signed up for Epic's email and wishlist alert subscriptions a free $10 coupon similar to the ones being offered during this recent holiday promotion. This is just one of many changes that the Epic Game Store has seen over the past year, as Epic recently announced a new achievement system will be added to the digital storefront later this year. Epic continues to build its library of available titles with big hits like last year's Final Fantasy VII Remake.
All these free giveaways and promotional deals might not be adding money into Epic’s coffers at the moment, but Epic CEO Tim Sweeney is confident that the Epic Game Store will begin to see profits in 2024. In the meantime, players appear to already be taking advantage of this latest generous offer from the Epic Games Store, as Epic has reported several server crashes and timeout errors since the promotion began.
