Enola Holmes 2 is officially moving forward at Netflix, with Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill returning. Last fall saw the release of Enola Holmes, the first movie centered on Sherlock Holmes' brilliant younger sister. The film, which was directed by Harry Bradbeer, was based on the first of author Nancy Springer's young adult books and followed Enola (Brown) as she investigated the sudden disappearance of her mother (Helena Bonham Carter). Enola Holmes was greeted with positive reviews and was a popular pick on Netflix at the time of its release.

Not long after Enola Holmes premiered, talks of a sequel began to emerge. Though the first film wrapped things up rather neatly, Springer has multiple novels in her series that could provide the basis for additional projects. At the time, Brown shared her hopes for a sequel, and Bradbeeer later confirmed Enola Holmes 2 had been discussed at Netflix. However, things have been rather quiet for the past few months.

That stretch of silence has now come to an end. On Thursday, Netflix announced on social media that Enola Holmes 2 is officially on the way. Both Brown and Cavill (as Sherlock) are confirmed to return, and Bradbeer will be back as director. Jack Thorne will also pen the script once more. No word yet on if those such as Carter, Sam Claflin (Mycroft Holmes), or Louis Partridge (Lord Tewkesbury) will return as well.

Recently, Netflix has begun signaling its interest in developing its own franchises. For example, next week's Army of the Dead is expected to kick off a new zombie universe for the streamer, and there have already been a handful of romance and holiday movies that have expanded into proper series. Enola Holmes has the source material to back it up, and it helps that two of its stars lead some of Netflix's biggest shows. Brown will continue to lead Stranger Things, while Cavill's The Witcher will finally return for season 2 later this year. With all that in mind, Enola Holmes 2 is a no-brainer.

Seeing as the first Enola Holmes covered Springer's first book, it seems likely the sequel could adapt her second, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady. That book sees Enola investigating another disappearance, this time of young Lady Cecily Alastair. Cavill's return in Enola Holmes 2 also suggests the sequel could further the relationship between Sherlock and Enola, which proved to be a bit strained in the first installment. In short, there are plenty of options for where the movie could go, and only time will tell what it will choose. Netflix hasn't given a time frame for when fans can expect Enola Holmes 2, but hopefully more details will emerge soon.
