Landing the right release date can mean everything for a film's box office success, and for Summit Entertainment, they will be making a slight change to one of their upcoming tentpole films which is moving from a spring 2013 date to a November 2013 release.
Ender’s Game will be now released in the more holiday-friendly release of November 1st, 2013. Other films that will be compete against Ender’s Game are Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi pic Singularity and DreamWorks Animation’s Me and My Shadow opening a week later (followed by Thor 2 and The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire).
Rescheduling dates in this instance, is not a cause for concern nor does it signal the quality of the movie. At this point it's way to early to determine that. The new release date may be a smart strategic move due to the fact that March 2013 was already way to crowded for its own good. Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful, Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer, The Host, the Percy Jackson sequel, and Neil Blomkamp’s sci-fier Elysium have already planted themselves throughout the month.
With so many major films already being released March 2013, it's no surprise that Summit decided to change the release date for Ender’s Game. The month of November is a tad quieter, and by securing a spot now, it may lay claim to more screens before a series of heavy hitters take over theater screens.
Ender’s Game is currently under production under the direction of Gavin Hood and the release date change could be a simple case of finding the necessary time to schedule production. Asa Butterfield stars as the titular character whose natural strategic ability to kill aliens in a simulated game gets him recruited into a military program that prepares soldiers for war.
Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin also star in Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s novel of the same name. Ender's Game opens in theaters on November 1, 2013.
