'Ender's Game' Adds Another Young Actor

The Hunger Games movie may be making all the headlines these days, but another popular YA series turned movie tentpole, Ender's Game, is slowly making a splash of its own.

The Gavin Hood-directed feature is based on the first in a series of books by Hugo and Nebula Award-winning writer, Orson Scott Card.  The books feature a dystopian future in which the Earth has suffered multiple attacks from an alien race. As a result, adults begin to teach kids to fight off the aliens at an elite training academy.

Reports state that Canadian teen star Brendan Meyer has joined Ender's Game.  He joins Hugo's Asa Butterfield who stars as Ener Wiggin, and Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). Sir Ben Kingsley is also rumored to co-star in an unspecified role.

Meyer is rumored to be playing Stilson, one of Ender’s classmates who taunts him during training. Meyer is currently starring in the Disney XD series Mr. Young as a kid genius who returns to high school to teach his own ex-classmates. The Ender's Game producing team includes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek 2, Transformers, Fringe) - who suffice to say know a thing or two about sci-fi at this point. Hood, who made the excellent Tsotsi, has a proven track record of directing young casts.

Here is a quick description of Ender's Game:

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut--young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

It's easy to be excited by the talent that is beginning to populate this flick.  You can't go wrong with Sir Kingsley, Steinfeld has proven to be an adept actress in her own right, and Butterfield holds the screen with confidence in Hugo.

Ender's Game is slated to bow on March 15, 2013
