Disney’s Disenchanted, the highly anticipated sequel to 2007’s Enchanted, has wrapped filming and will be released in 2022, according to director Adam Shankman. The original Enchanted starred Amy Adams as princess-to-be Giselle, who finds herself magically transported from the animated kingdom of Andalasia to live-action New York City. The musical comedy also starred James Marsden, Idina Menzel, and Grey’s Anatomy’s Patrick Dempsey. Enchanted was a critical and commercial hit for Disney, and the film received many accolades, including three Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song.

After years of rumors about a potential sequel, Disenchanted was officially confirmed last December and will premiere on streaming service Disney+. The sequel was written and directed by Shankman, who has previously directed films such as the 2007 musical Hairspray and Mandy Moore’s tearjerker A Walk To Remember. Adams, Dempsey, Marsden, and Menzel all returned to reprise their roles in the sequel, alongside new cast members such as Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, Oscar Nuñez, and Kolton Stewart. Maya Rudolph also joined the Disenchanted cast as villain Malvina, and newcomer Gabriella Baldacchino stepped into the role of Dempsey’s now-grown daughter Morgan, who was played in Enchanted by Rachel Covey.

Disenchanted has been in production in Ireland for the past few months, and now Shankman confirms in an Instagram post that filming has been completed, and the movie is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in 2022. His photo shows himself and star Adams, pictured from the back, holding hands and gazing over a field. His caption informs viewers, “that’s a wrap” on Disenchanted. See his original post below:

Shankman has been posting sneak peeks from behind the scenes of Disenchanted since filming began in May, showing glimpses of the film’s stars and production process. Not much has been shared about the plot beyond a simple synopsis, which reveals that Disenchanted picks up 10 years after Enchanted, and will - as the title suggests - show Giselle questioning the “happily ever after” she found at the end of the first film, with consequences that extend across the real world and into Andalasia.

While it may seem surprising that a sequel to such a successful and beloved Disney film would take over a decade to come together, it’s a good sign. It shows that the cast and creative team took their time to make sure they had something worthwhile. (Of course, Amy Adams’ busy film career may have had something to do with the delay as well.) With so many of the players from the original Enchanted returning - including songwriting geniuses Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz - Disenchanted has every chance of being a major success for Disney and a welcome escape for everyone else.
