Disenchanted, the long-awaited sequel to Disney movie Enchanted, has officially begun production, and director Adam Shankman and star Amy Adams welcomed the new cast in a cute video. Enchanted was a big success when it was first released in 2007 – the twists it put on the archetypal Disney Princess story earned it critical praise, as well as its unique and fun combination of live-action, traditional animation, and CGI. The musical comedy stars Amy Adams (in her breakout role) as Giselle, a princess-to-be who finds herself transported from her animated fairy-tale kingdom of Andalasia to New York City. Rumors of a sequel to Enchanted had been circulated for years, so fans rejoiced when Disenchanted was first announced at last years’ Disney Investor Day.

Disenchanted will be a Disney+ exclusive and will see Adams return alongside other original stars Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, and James Marsden. Previously announced new cast members include Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, and Maya Rudolph – who is thrilled to be playing the villain. Now, via Twitter, Disney has announced that Disenchanted has finally started production. They also revealed even more additions to the already star-studded cast – The Office’s Oscar Nunez, newcomer Kolton Stewart, and 19-year-old Gabriella Baldacchino as Morgan Phillip, Robert (Dempsey) and Giselle’s daughter. To celebrate, Disney released a heartwarming video of Baldacchino learning she got the role from Shankman and Adams.

Though Disenchanted doesn’t have an official release date yet, production starting now means it’s likely to hit Disney+ at some point in early 2022 as one of the many, many original projects the streaming service plans to release over the next few years. Disenchanted may be arriving much later than originally expected, but with a cast like this and Shankman and Adams's enthusiasm, fans can be reassured that the sequel will be worth the wait.
