The first set photos for Disney's Disenchanted, the long-awaited sequel to 2007's Enchanted, have arrived, revealing Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey's returns. The Mouse House has been interested in revisiting the world of Enchanted for some time now, but the sequel has endured a lengthy development process. After years of rewrites, director changes, and general uncertainty, Disney officially announced Disenchanted to be moving forward at the very end of 2020. The announcement also confirmed Adams would reprise her role as princess-turned-modern day woman Giselle. Disenchanted will see a few other returning players as well, including Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel.
Currently set to debut later this year on Disney+, Disenchanted will reportedly find Giselle questioning her happy ending years after the first film. Her uncertainty will turn everyone's lives upside down, including those who live in the fairytale land of Andalasia. Disenchanted also stars Jayma Mays, Yvette Nicole Brown, Oscar Nunez, and Maya Rudolph as the villain. Meanwhile, Gabriella Baldacchino will play Giselle's stepdaughter Morgan, taking over from the first film's star Rachel Covey. Filming largely took place last year, but it looks like some reshoots have yielded an exciting update.

Enchanted received raves for its subversion of the typical fairytale mold, and Disenchanted has the opportunity to continue that trend through a different lens. By revisiting Andalasia, the sequel can bring modern sensibilities into a fantasy world and really shake up what audiences might come to expect from it. The basic premise for Disenchanted - Giselle questioning her happiness - already does much to upend what audiences would anticipate from a Disney story like this one. It'll be interesting to see an arc like that play out against the backdrop of a fantasy realm.
Disenchanted may be in the midst of reshoots ,but that can still mean the movie is on track to premiere later this year; additional filming is far from uncommon these days. A holiday debut on Disney+ could be perfect, particularly since the original Enchanted was released around Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, a late 2022 release means Disney likely won't be revealing new things about Disenchanted until much closer. For now, these wonderful looks at Adams and Dempsey as Giselle and Robert will have to be enough to tide everyone over until the next update.
