Encanto co-director Jared Bush responds to a question about Mirabel's father and explains the titular town's connection to the outside world. A Disney regular known for Zootopia and Moana, Bush co-directed Encanto alongside Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith, which features lyrics written by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda. Though the animated musical underperformed at the box office, it went on to find a new life on Disney+ and become one of the studio's biggest hits in recent memory, taking home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

Encanto begins with a prologue showing Pedro and Alma Madrigal fleeing their home in Colombia with their infant triplets, pursued by unknown armed assailants who eventually kill Pedro. However, Alma is able to repel them with her enchanted candle, which creates Casita, a sentient house for the Madrigal family hidden away high in the mountains. Five decades later, the village thrives under the protection of the magical candle, which grants special powers to each Madrigal descendant, except for Abuela Alma's exuberant granddaughter, Mirabel, who is the daughter of Agustín Madrigal, who married into the family and thus also lacks powers.

Now, Encanto co-director Bush responds to a fan inquiry on Twitter asking about Agustín's arrival in Encanto and the magical town's connection to the outside world. Since Mirabel's father came from the city, the fan wondered if Agustín filled the residents of Encanto in on current events, or if Abuela tried to suppress their knowledge of the outside world. Bush quells these fan theories with a simple answer, stating "Everyone arrived at the Encanto at the same time." Check out the exchange below:

This is just one of many Encanto fan theories and inquires Bush has fielded recently. The Encanto director has also responded directly to theories about a subtle Moana Easter egg, Dolores' depiction on the door in Casita, and the possibility of Mirabel being bisexual. Bush has also addressed what would have happened if Mirabel and Bruno didn't work together to save Casita, and how its reconstruction will affect the Madrigal family dynamics moving forward, possibly in a sequel, which has yet to be announced.

Encanto is clearly critically acclaimed, though what makes it such a special film is the passionate engagement from its fans, evidenced by Bush interacting with many of them on social media. Agustín, who is voiced by That '70s Show's Wilmer Valderrama, is a minor character in Encanto who has virtually no effect on the overall plot, yet this hasn't stopped fans from scouring every second of the film in search of potential clues about his backstory and going straight to the source with their findings. Bush has been happy to confirm or deny many fan theories, and perhaps he will share some more interesting details about Encanto very soon.
