The new trailer for Encanto has finally been released, revealing the magical world of Disney’s latest animated feature. Directed by Byron Howard, Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith and written by Smith, Bush and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto is currently scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release in the fall of 2021. The film will be Miranda’s first solo venture as a song writer for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following his acclaimed contributions to the soundtrack of Moana.

Set in a fictionalized version of Colombia, Encanto tells the story of the Madrigal family, each member of which possesses powerful and unique magical abilities. Each member except for Mirabel, that is, who struggles to fit into her family because of her apparent lack of magic. Teaser footage for the film has shown off a gorgeously animated world of nature and adventure, filled with plenty of the cute animal companions Disney’s modern films have become known for.

Now that Disney has released the new Encanto trailer, that colorful world has been revealed in its full glory. Mirabel’s journey to save her world’s magic definitely has some identifying Disney marks, but the movie also looks like it could become a unique and compelling new entry in the Disney canon when it releases later in 2021, especially when paired with Miranda’s music. Check out the Encanto new trailer below.

As heard in the trailer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz will provide the voice of Mirabel Madrigal. Beatriz recently collaborated with Miranda on the film adaptation of his Tony-winning Broadway musical In the Heights, where she played Carla. Not much of Miranda’s music is heard in the trailer, other than some fun background beats, but if his work on Moana is any indication, he should be a great pick to bring Disney’s latest magical world to life.

Encanto will be Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 60th feature film, following the release of Raya and the Last Dragon earlier this year. Disney hasn’t shared any firm details yet about the new film’s release plan, but it seems likely that the movie will premiere exclusively in theaters. Disney has continued with a hybrid theater/streaming release model for a number of its big movies this year, including Black Widow. However, the company has said that some films releasing later this year, like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will debut exclusively in theaters. Disney animation fans still have a little while to wait, but Encanto looks like it should be a fun new adventure when it releases later this fall.
