In a truly impressive display of the movie's staying power, every song from the Encanto soundtrack is currently on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Directed by Bryon Howard and Jared Bush and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, Encanto is the latest animated movie from Disney, and it's been nothing short of a major hit since it debuted in November. Encanto posted what was at the time the best numbers at the box office for an animated movie during the coronavirus pandemic, nearly grossing $100 million domestically. It then arrived on streaming at the end of December, which propelled Encanto to viral status online.
Encanto follows Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), the black sheep of her magical family. For generations, every member of the Madrigal family has been blessed with a special gift from their casita - except for Mirabel. When the Madrigal's house starts to lose its magic, though, it just might be that Mirabel is the only one who can save the day. Thanks to its creative story and bright visuals, Encanto has received immense praise from fans and critics. On top of that, its infectious soundtrack has proven to be a really, really big hit.
Much has been said about the success of ensemble number "We Don't Talk About Bruno," but now it looks like every Encanto song is feeling the love. As of Monday, February 7, every song from the soundtrack has made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as the organization confirmed. "Bruno" is number one, while "Surface Pressure" and "The Family Madrigal" are next at #8 and #20, respectively. All of Encanto's songs were written by Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, so perhaps it isn't too surprising that each one has become a hit in their own right. Miranda has become something of a Disney staple in recent years, helping out with the music for movies like Moana and the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Disney likely feels pretty good about its partnership with him right about now. Encanto's music has by far become the most successful for the studio in recent years, seemingly surpassing the phenomenon that was Frozen's "Let It Go".
Of all the Encanto songs, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was the first to reach "Let It Go" status, but it's clear the rest of the soundtrack has a staying power that Frozen's might not have had. Nevertheless, everyone involved with making Encanto has a lot to be proud of. This is a movie that has touched audiences of all ages, races, and genders. Few might've predicted how big Encanto would get, but now no one is underestimating it.
