Encanto is one of the most relatable new Disney movies, but that doesn't mean that it can't be funny. Throughout the film, there are perfect beats of humor to break up the tension of the family trauma arc. Some of these moments are physical humor, but there are some great lines that fans can quote in their daily lives.

The movie's humor is a little more subdued than other Disney films, but it is definitely there, keeping the movie entertaining for younger audiences and keeping the film's deeper messages from making the pace drag.

Bruno's Relatable Awkwardness

"I Don’t Really Have A Good Reason, But If I Did, You’d Be Like, 'Ooh, That’s A Good Reason.'"

Encanto Bruno Knocks On Wood

Bruno can be awkward in his attempts to get his thoughts across, which comes across perfectly in this line. When Bruno is trying to convince Mirabel to leave his domain, he searches for a reason to give her. Lacking a good one, he alludes to a situation in which he does have a good reason, hoping that will be enough to get Mirabel to leave him alone.

Mirabel probably wouldn't have taken any reason as a good reason for Bruno to stay away from the family, since she is dedicated to keeping the family together at all costs. But Bruno doesn't know that, which leads to him trying, awkwardly, to make her do just that.

Agustin's Frequent Bee Encounters

"There Were Bees Everywhere."

Agustin is a good father, but he is terrible at getting things done without getting hurt. Being accident-prone is a trait and a quote that describes his personality perfectly, repeatedly stumbling into beehives despite having a dangerous bee allergy.

He repeatedly shows up with half his body puffed up due to his allergy, which is quickly healed thanks to his wife's gift. Despite the seriousness of the situation if it happened in real life, the moment is hilarious when Agutin seems to find bees wherever he goes.

The Townspeoples' Problems

"He Told Me I’d Grow A Gut, And Just Like He Said!"

Townsperson who grew a gut from Encanto in We Don't Talk About Bruno

This is one of many lines where Bruno gets blamed for things beyond his control, a trend that leaves fans demanding justice for Bruno. The townsperson blames his gut on Bruno's prophecy, not on his own eating and exercising habits.

Despite fans disliking this character for his attitude toward Mirabel and Bruno, it is funny to see his stomach pooch out in the midst of more serious accusations.

Mirabel's Hero Journey

"I Will Save The Miracle! Wait. How Do I Save A Miracle?"

Mirabel Madrigal in Encanto

Mirabel has several moments throughout the movie where her determination causes her to bite off more than she can chew, and this is one of the funnier ones. She decides that she will save the miracle for the sake of her family, but it takes her a minute to realize she has no idea how to do that.

Mirabel eventually does save the miracle by patching up the relationships between family members, which suggests that she always had the power in her to do it, but it's still a funny moment as she contemplates how massive the task she's committed herself to is.

The Disastrous Proposal

"Yes! Then Let’s Hope Tonight Is Not A Horrible Disaster."

The Madrigal family hugging each other on Encanto

This line comes from Mariano's mother and is a perfect example of the irony the film uses. Nobody would ever say this line in a normal situation, but it's perfect as an introduction to the proposal scene, where audiences know that Dolores knows the secret and is going to eventually reveal it.

The dinner was doomed from the start, but by having this line here, it's kind of funny when everything falls apart, rather than horrible. Much of the film is extremely serious, so lines like this help to break the tension and keep audiences from getting too bogged down by the painful elements of the narrative.

Mirabel's Place In Her Family

"My Family’s Amazing, And I’m In My Family, So… Well…"

Mirabel smiling while holding a cup in Encanto

This line is from the song "The Family Madrigal," one of the best songs in Encanto, and shows Mirabel's uncertainty in relation to her family. Everybody else in the family is described as "fantastical and magical," but Mirabel spends the entire song avoiding having to talk about herself.

When she can't avoid it anymore, she tries to describe herself in relation to her family, rather than talking about herself in isolation. Because her family (particularly Abuela) trained her that she wasn't amazing because she lacked a gift, she struggles to think of herself that way without tying back to her family. It's an awkward insecurity that audiences can relate to.

The Rude Townspeople

"I Call It The ‘Not Special’ Special; Since You Have No Gift."

The Not Special Special from Encanto

The townspeople in Encanto can be mean, especially this guy who delivers the party supplies to Mirabel. It seems like his whole purpose is to remind her that she has no gift and therefore doesn't matter.

That being said, the bluntness of his commentary is funny. It's a topic that Mirabel and her family skirt around, barely acknowledging it, and by putting it so overtly, the man's comment pops.

Mirabel's Animal Companion

"Lot Of Stairs. But At Least I’ll Have A Friend—Nope, He Flew Away Immediately."

Mirabell standing with a toucan in Encanto

Despite its deep message, this still is a Disney movie, and Mirabel is kind of treated like a Disney princess by having a toucan as an animal companion. Having the toucan follow her makes it seem like there's something special about her too, but it then immediately flies away when she starts out on her journey, as though to remind the audience that she isn't special.

Mirabel's narration of the moment is funny, bringing attention to the moment that wouldn't have been there without her line. The toucan runs away again a few minutes later as her activities make the house unstable, and fans have to wonder why it was there to begin with if it was going to fly away any time things got difficult.

Bruno's Alter-Egos

"All The Patching’s Done By Hernando." "I’m Hernando, And I’m Scared Of Nothing…" "I’m Jorge. I Make The Spackle."

Bruno Acting As His Alter Ego, With a Bucket On His Head

Thanks to the blame everyone piles on him, Bruno struggles to see himself as useful in his own right, which makes him put on different characters to imagine his own usefulness. Despite how heartbreaking this can be when examined in that vein, it is hilarious to see Bruno pulling up his hood and throwing a bucket on his head to become Hernando and Jorge.

Camilo's Best Line

"What? We Don’t Have A House. I Can’t Say We Don’t Have A House? What Is That? Not A House."

Camilo Madrigal looking wryly at someone in Encanto

Camilo is a fan-favorite character, with audiences loving his chaotic energy. His best line comes after the house has come down and everyone is bonding. He points out that it might be great that everyone is getting along again, but it still doesn't make it so that they have a house.

When his father tries to get him to stop complaining, he gets frustrated, pointing to the rubble and making it clear that it definitely isn't a house. Fans love the character and the line, enjoying how Camilo keeps a positive attitude throughout the family's troubles.
