Disney's Encanto shows that Mirabel didn't get magic powers; however, one of the directors hinted she got a "gift" after all. Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) isn't necessarily like the rest of her family in Encanto. Though the members of the Family Madrigal all get special powers, Mirabel doesn't get a gift in the film. In fact, the magic door that's supposed to lead to her powers and her new magic room simply disappears during her childhood ceremony. Mirabel's lack of powers sours her relationship with Abuela Alma (Maria Cecilia Botero and Olga Merediz), who is constantly worried about the family's magic. However, Mirabel's relentless drive ultimately helps her solve the family's problems after their magical house crumbles to the ground.

In the end, Mirabel and Alma reconcile their relationship. During "Dos Oruguitas," Abuela Alma tells Mirabel how the family truly received the miracle on the night her husband, Pedro Madrigal, died. Mirabel realizes that Abuela Alma has gone through unspeakable pain, and she just wants to keep her family from feeling the same devastation. Mirabel then leads the family in rebuilding the house, even bringing the magic back to the Madrigals by placing the final doorknob on the structure.

Though Encanto shows that Mirabel doesn't receive a gift as a child, it turns out she might have one after all. One of the Encanto directors, Jared Bush, often answers fan questions online, and he explained (via Twitter) why Mirabel and Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) have a close relationship. "He’s the ONLY member of the family born AFTER Mirabel didn’t get her 'gift' - as a result, he’s only ever known her as his wonderful, empathetic cousin who he loves unconditionally," Bush wrote. However, while writing the statement, Bush interestingly put gift in quotation marks when talking about Mirabel's lack of powers. The quotation marks may hint Mirabel received a gift after all.

Encanto Mirabel and Abuela Hugging

If Mirabel did get a gift, it's the ability to see people for who they are. Throughout the film, Mirabel sees the person underneath the perfect surface. In Luisa's (Jessica Darrow) case, she sees how the family pressure gets to her sister. In Isabela's (Diane Guerrero) case, she sees how her sister pretends to be perfect but yearns to be herself. Bush has also explained that Mirabel's name is a play on the Spanish word "mira," which means look. She also has glasses, further showing how she sees things differently from others. In the film, Mirabel proves she had the gift of seeing people all along.

Besides being able to see people for who they are, Mirabel appears to follow in Abuela Alma's footsteps. Abuela Alma constantly puts all the family's burdens on herself, and Mirabel is there to help lighten the load. As a result, she's prepared to lead her family into the future, which Alma could never have done on her own. So in a way, Mirabel's magic door didn't disappear during her childhood ceremony after all. It simply became the front door to the new house in Encanto.
