Encanto has quickly proven that it is one of the best Disney movies ever made. It manages to both capture a similar sort of magic to many of the studio’s other offerings while also subverting some of the viewer’s expectations. A significant contributor to the movie’s success is its sterling cast of characters, all of whom almost seem to leap off of the screen.

It is thus especially useful to think about them in terms of their Game of Thrones counterparts, in order to fully appreciate their richness and depth.

Mirabel - Arya

Mirabel will surely come to be seen as one of the best heroines from a Disney movie. With her feisty and independent spirit, she isn’t one to let anything stand in her way, not even her own family’s disappointment.

In all of these respects, she very much resembles Arya, arguably one of the most popular and important of the characters to emerge from Game of Thrones. She is also not one to let others’ expectations of her determine her course of action, which is precisely why she ends up being such a great hero.

Abuela - Olenna Tyrell

As the matriarch of the Madrigal family, Abuela is always trying to do what is best for them as a whole, rather than individual members. Sometimes, however, this leads her to be somewhat cruel and unfeeling of theirs, particularly Mirabel.

In many ways, she bears a striking similarity to Lady Olenna Tyrell, a forbidding and powerful older woman who is willing to sacrifice almost everything to ensure that the members of her family are kept safe from what threatens them.

Bruno - Tyrion

Bruno is, of course, the subject of one of Encanto's best songs, but it’s also true that he bears a heavy burden as someone with the ability to see the future. As a result, he’s often ostracized and misunderstood by the other members of his family.

Tyrion, who according to many is one of the best characters in Game of Thrones, has to endure a similar amount of misunderstanding and mistreatment at the hands of his father, even though he genuinely wants what’s best for both them and the realm as a whole.

Julieta - Catelyn

Maribel’s mother Julieta is one of the most important people in her life, and she certainly goes out of her way to give love and protection to others. However, it also has to be said that she is sometimes too willing to give into others in an effort to keep the peace (particularly when it comes to Abuela and Madrigal).

Thus, she bears a striking resemblance to Catelyn Stark, another motherly figure whose love for her children sometimes led to her making poor decisions that negatively impacted both herself and them.

Pepa - Renly Baratheon

Pepa is one of the more intriguing characters in the story, and her emotions have a (sometimes unfortunate) connection to the weather. Indeed, of all the members in the family, she seems to be the one with the least control over her emotions.

Though there are several similar characters in Game of Thrones, the one that she most closely resembles is Renly Baratheon, someone else whose inability to hide what they were thinking often got them into trouble.

Isabela - Sansa

Isabella looking smug in Encanto and Sansa looking smug in Game of Thrones

In another Disney princess movie, Isabela would have been the center of the story, and in many ways, she is a very archetypal character. However, she shows that she has some remarkably hidden depths, particularly when it comes to her true feelings for her troublesome younger sister.

Sansa has the same kind of dynamic at work with her character, and though she begins the series somewhat naive and convinced of the truth of romance and chivalry, by the end she becomes a fearsome and formidable leader in her own right.

Camilo - Theon

Camilo is one of the more enigmatic members of the family. This can be seen in many aspects of his character, but especially his ability to transform into whatever he wants to be at a given moment. Of all of the characters that appear in Game of Thrones, Theon Greyjoy shows the most personalities as he moves through the series, moving from villain to abject victim of torture to hero.

More than almost any other character, he shows that he has a remarkably adaptable personality.

Dolores - Meera Reed

Like all of the other members of her family, Dolores has been blessed with a gift that can also be something of a burden. In her case, it’s being able to hear literally anything that happens. However, it’s to her credit that she is often very good at keeping these secrets from others.

She bears a very striking resemblance to Meera Reed, someone who was able to hear everything that passed with Bran yet showed that she could keep things to herself when it was required.

Luisa - Brienne

Luisa stoming angrily in Encanto and Brienne stomping angrily in Game of Thrones

There are few Game of Thrones characters quite as beloved or brave as Brienne of Tarth, who showed time and again that she was a true hero. In fact, she was often willing to sacrifice her own well-being for that of others.

In Encanto, this role is very often taken up by Luisa, whose gift of super-strength makes her one of the most powerful characters in the movie. However, as with Brienne, she also feels the heaviness of that responsibility, and it’s sometimes almost too much for her to bear, particularly in terms of her emotions.

Agustín Madrigal - Eddard

Like other great parents in the Disney world, Agustín clearly cares about his daughter and will do anything that he can to protect her. He is, likewise, something of a balancing force for his wife in particular, and his presence as something of an outsider gives him a perspective that others like.

He is thus very similar to Ned Stark, who was also the type of person who valued family and tradition and who also was willing to do almost anything that he could to protect the members of his family.
