One of the most relatable characters of the movie is the main character, Mirabel. She is kind, funny energetic, and inspiringly hopeful. While she is the only Madrigal family member not to receive a gift, she still somehow manages to keep her spirits up. Throughout the film, Mirabel's lines show what a phenomenal character she is, and these Mirabel quotes perfectly exemplify why she makes this film so special.

She Just Wants To Prove Herself

"Make your family proud!"

In the opening scene of the movie, Abuela tells a young Mirabel that she will make her family proud when she receives her gift. Of course, the gift ceremony is unsuccessful, so when 15-year-old Mirabel repeats this mantra to herself before starting her day, audiences can see just how much she internalized Abuela's words.

With no gift to define her role within the family, Mirabel attacks each day in an attempt to find a way to make herself useful. This isn't due simply to her own pride, but a very sincere love for her family and a desire to be a part of what makes them amazing.

She Wants To Believe She Is Special

"The truth is, gift or no gift, I am just as special as the rest of my family."

This line would ultimately end up being the theme of the movie and the lesson that Mirabel must teach her family. Not only does she have value without a gift, but her gifted family members must learn that they do as well.

While Mirabel would come to recognize her value and the value of her loved ones without magic, when she initially says this line it is with very little conviction. This shows the contrast between the beginning of the movie when she doubts her usefulness, and the end when she accepts who she is.

She's Ready For Her Miracle

"Bless me now as you blessed us all those years ago when you gave us a miracle."

Mirabel did her very best to keep a smile on her face and not feel the jealousy that was haunting her during her cousin's gift ceremony. When her excited family poses for a photo without her, however, her longing for her own gift and a defined role in her family bubbles over.

This line takes place in Mirabel's song "Waiting On A Miracle," which is a plea to the powers that granted her family their miracle for her to receive a gift as well. In one of the saddest quotes in Encanto, she desperately states that she is ready, and whether by coincidence or as a response to this proclamation, the house begins to crumble around her, starting her on her mission to save everyone.

She Will Figure It Out As She Goes

"I will save the miracle. Wait, how do I save a miracle?"

Mirabel is nothing if not determined. When she overhears her Abuela praying to Abuelo Pedro for help saving the miracle, she decides that this help will come from her. She dramatically prepares herself, getting dressed and preparing to head out the door. But before she can set off, she realizes that she has no idea where to start.

This is revealing of Mirabel's personality. She does not always give a lot of forethought to her plans, making her clumsy and quirky. However, her sheer determination is exactly what the family needs. Mirabel uses this pluckiness to find a starting point, which sets her off on her journey to finding answers.

She Has A Good Sense Of Humor

"Whoa! A lot of stairs, but at least I'll have a friend. No, he flew away immediately."

Mirabel has a unique way of talking that differentiates her from other Disney heroes. Her external dialogue as she awkwardly makes her way through Bruno's tower shows audiences her sense of humor. This is impressive considering the eerie atmosphere of Bruno's room, and her complete lack of knowledge on what exactly she is looking for.

In a family that is very tightly wound, with everyone striving to please Abuela, Mirabel's humor while saying one of the funniest quotes in Encanto, and her ability to improvise, is part of what makes her so valuable to her family.

It's All Because Of Her

"I broke into Bruno's tower. I found his last vision, The family's in trouble. The magic is dying. The house is breaking. Luisa's gift is fading. And I think it's all because of...me?"

When Mirabel's father finds her looking at Bruno's vision, Mirabel must give a quick recount of everything that has happened. She explains that everything is falling apart and that she somehow has something to do with it.

Mirabel's anxiety comes across in her rapid speech, showing audiences that while the miracle seems to be crumbling around her, she has no idea how she could be causing it. As someone who wants nothing more than to see her family, especially Abuela, get everything they expect, the idea that she could be hurting them without meaning to is terrifying to her.

She Knows All About Being The Black Sheep

"Sometimes family weirdos just get a bad rap."

In one of the catchiest songs of Encanto, "We Don't Talk About Bruno," Mirabel is told that Bruno is a malicious character who uses his prophecies to bring about bad luck and misfortune. When she meets him, however, she finds that he is an anxious and gentle individual who wants nothing but the best for his family.

Mirabel is immediately able to relate to Bruno. He is not accepted by Abuela, through no fault of his own.  Due to both their statuses as family weirdos, they were kindred spirits from the moment they met, and this shows just how much Mirabel recognized that.

Family Is Everything

"After I save the miracle, I'm bringing you home."

If Mirabel understands anything, it's a complicated relationship with family. She is loyal to her family so when she realizes that Bruno had never left and simply hid in the walls in order to be near them all without harming them, she immediately understood.

The Big Confrontation

"I will never be good enough for you, will I?"

Audiences watch Mirabel refuse to give up hope throughout the whole movie. Despite having no gift, she is determined to help her family. However everyone has their breaking point, and Mirabel's came with the realization that she was never going to get her Abuela's approval.

Striving to meet unrealistic expectations can wear anyone down, and Abuela's expectations for her family were draining their home of all of its love and magic. Mirabel had to take on the difficult task of confronting Abuela, leading to Casita's destruction and one of the saddest scenes in Encanto.

The Miracle Is You

"We were given a miracle, because of you. We are a family, because of you. And nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix together."

When Mirabel confronted Abuela, the house came crashing down, with the small amount of magic that was left expelled. Only in the ruin of everything that she had been trying to protect was Abuela able to see how she had been the one that was harming her family, and that Mirabel's words were true.

However, Mirabel's empathy allowed her to see how her Abuela had reached that point to begin with. In response to Abuela's apology, Mirabel reminded her that she had still done so much for the family and that together they would be able to fix their home.
