The upcoming Empire of Sin, a new game by Romero Games and Paradox Interactive, is being released this December on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Romero Games is an independent video game development studio, run by husband and wife duo Brenda and John Romero. After working together on several games, the Romeros set up Romero Games in 2015.

In that time, the studio has released two titles, Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate's Hideout and Gunman Taco Truck. The latter is a reboot of John Romero’s mobile game from the late 1980s that focuses on collecting gems across varying level backdrops. Gunman Taco Truck – which is currently available on Steam and mobile platforms – is a 2D single-player game in which the goal is to get your Taco Truck across the post-apocalyptic United States to the safe havens of Canada. Once there, players can get their taco business up, running, and ready to thrive.

Empire of Sin is the third game to be released by the couple. After first being presented at Nintendo’s Direct presentation at E3 in 2019, it was originally set to be released in the second quarter of 2020. After Romero Games announced its decision to delay the release to fine-tune elements of the game, it is now set to launch on December 1, 2020, and it will release for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Mafia games seem to be all the rage nowadays. Empire of Sin, however, is set in Chicago during the prohibition era of the 1920s and 1930s, players take control of one of several mob bosses. The objective – to gain control of Chicago. Compared as a successor to 1999’s Mob Rule, the gameplay is in the style of a tactical role-playing game, combining the elements of traditional role-playing video games with that of a tactical game. Players must use logic and cunning to work their way up the criminal ladder. This is done by enlisting underlings to your criminal empire. And, obviously, this would not be a criminal empire without some sordid businesses to take control of.

Brothels, casinos, illicit breweries and speakeasies can all be obtained by the player to extend their influence in the city. Of course, Empire of Sin players will be expected to deal with rival gangs and the strong hand of the law during gameplay. Alliances can be formed with rival gangs (even if only for the short term), alcohol can be used as currency and combat is used to secure new businesses into your empire. Think Bugsy Malone meets Peaky Blinders.
