After Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II in 2011, 20-year-old actress Emma Watson will be done with the Harry Potter franchise. But her career will go on now that she has landed her first post-Hermione gig. Watson will co-star alongside Percy Jackson and the Olympian: The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
We don't have too much information on the film yet other than it's based on the Stephen Chbosky novel of the same name. Following a recent trend in the movie industry, the lovable loser has been cherished by audiences over the last few years and filmmakers have heard the call. Cinema Blend gave a brief overview of the plot:
"It’s based on a book about a shy teenager who writes letters to an anonymous person about his awkward adolescence. Surprisingly, for a shy and unpopular teenager, he manages to get involved in drugs and sex."
Watson recently enrolled at Brown University and interviewed with Vanity Fair about life in college. You may wonder the relevance here but considering the environment in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, her experiences with college parties may help in preparation for the role. She's been to a few and already shown the signs of a newbie.
"I felt like I'd walked into an American teen movie. I picked up the red cups. I was like, 'Wow, they really do drink from these.'”
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower may be the most important performance of Watson's career. Every franchise star, child or not, has the difficult task of shaking the image and establishing an ability to transcend pre-conceived notions of character. Her co-stars have had a few opportunities already, but still search for their own identity.
It may takes years and a handful of roles to shed herself of Hermione, but if any Harry Potter star can do it, it is Emma Watson. Between her talent and looks, there is plenty to offer Hollywood.
What do you think of her career? Will Emma Watson have an illustrious career?
