In 2007, Emma Stone landed her first-ever feature film role as Jules in the comedy classic Superbad, where she instantly made her way onto the list of rising stars. Since then, the A-list actress has starred in the critically acclaimed The Favourite and even won an Oscar for her performance in Damien Chazelle’s musical masterpiece, La La Land.
However, during her lauded career thus far, Stone has acted in a few questionable projects that garnered less than stellar reviews from both critics and fans alike. Some of her lowest-rated films include her controversial role in Aloha and her voice work in Marmaduke. Let’s take a look back at 10 of Emma Stone’s worst movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Magic In The Moonlight (2014) – 51%
In 2014, Emma Stone joined the long list of Woody Allen muses when she starred in his feature film, Magic in the Moonlight, opposite Colin Firth.
Set in 1928, the film centers on a clairvoyant nay-sayer, Stanley Crawford (portrayed by Firth), who tries to debunk psychic, Sophie Baker (Stone). The film didn’t win critics or audiences over for the lack of chemistry between the two main characters, and most of the time Stone looked like she was flailing.
Irrational Man (2014) – 47%
Besides Magic in the Moonlight, Stone also starred in another one of Woody Allen’s projects, Irrational Man, which unfortunately also made this list. In the film, Stone plays a young student, Jill Pollard, who starts to develop feelings for her tormented philosophy professor (played by Joaquin Phoenix). After the two begin a relationship, both their lives take a dramatic turn.
Although Irrational Man was the better of the two Allen projects that Stone starred in, she fell short once again. This could possibly fall into Allan’s lack of direction. rather than Stone’s acting skills.
The House Bunny (2008) – 43%
One of Stone’s first major roles was portraying virginal sorority sister Natalie in The House Bunny. It was this role where Stone perfected her adorkable persona and managed to cement herself as a rising comedy star.
In The House Bunny, Stone’s character takes in an aging Playboy bunny (Anna Faris) to become the “house mother” of her loser sorority. The film also came out at the same time as another one of Stone’s film, The Rocker, and managed to open at #2 at the box office.
The Rocker (2008) – 41%
The Rocker was only Stone’s second-ever Hollywood film after her role in the comedy classic Superbad. Although Superbad put Stone on a long list of young stars to look out for, The Rocker kind of took her career a few steps backward.
In the film, Stone appears as Amelie, a member of a teenage rock band with dreams of becoming famous. In order to do so, they enlist a washed-up drummer (Rainn Wilson) to help with their cause.
Gangster Squad (2013) – 32%
Gangster Squad is one of Stone’s three collaborations with Ryan Gosling. Unlike Crazy, Stupid, Love, Stone failed to win over critics in her role as Grace Faraday, the girlfriend of an infamous crime boss (Sean Penn) who finds herself falling in love with cop Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling).
Gangster Squad feels more like an excuse for the actors to play dress up and fails to portray the bygone gangster era of 1949s Los Angeles.
Paper Man (2010) – 32%
Although Paper Man only received a score of 32%, Emma Stone shines in her role as 17-year-old Abby. In the indie film, Stone stars alongside Jeff Daniels, who portrays a struggling writer, and Ryan Reynolds, who plays the imaginary Captain Excellent. Both men fail in comparison to Stone here.
Unfortunately, the film was so bad, it was never released in any home video format in the United States.
Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past (2009) – 27%
Matthew McConaughey stars as a serial womanizer in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, a film that’s supposed to be a witty take on the literary classic, A Christmas Carol.
Stone plays the very permed ex-girlfriend of McConaughey’s character. Although her part is very minor, she manages to provide a lot of the film’s better jokes. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to save Ghosts of Girlfriends Past from being a box office bomb.
Aloha (2015) – 20%
In 2015 Stone was notoriously cast as Allison Ng in Cameron Crowe’s Aloha. Considering the character was supposed to be one-quarter Chinese and one-quarter Hawaiian, Stone was quickly met with a lot of criticism for taking on the role.
Along with whitewashing, Aloha’s storyline also came under fire for not being meaty enough. The film also stars Bradley Cooper as a military contractor who falls in love with Stone’s character.
Marmaduke (2010) – 9%
Marmaduke is a live-action adaptation of the comic strip of the same name and was ripped apart by critics for being dull and unfunny. To be fair, Stone only lent her voice talents to the film, but that won’t erase it from being one of her worst films, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
In the film, Stone voices an Australian Shepard named Mazie who has a crush on Marmaduke. Owen Wilson voices the titular character.
Movie 43 (2013) – 5%
Emma Stone’s role in Movie 43 tops the list of her worst movies ever made. The R-rated project is a mess of a film, which showcases a series of interconnected short stories as a producer pitches his ideas to Hollywood A-list actors.
Stone stars as Veronica in her short segment opposite Kieran Culkin. Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Chris Pratt, Halle Berry, and more also star. Although some of the industry’s biggest names were involved, critics did not like the film and described it as “utterly disgusting.”
