Emma Stone has quickly grown from the charming supporting actor in comedies to one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. While she first got audiences' attention with her impeccable comedic skills, she soon proved herself to be incredibly versatile with a number of different projects.
With box office hits, Oscar wins and critical acclaim, Stone's star is at an all-time high. But no one is perfect and even her impressive career to date is not without the occasional misstep. Stone's filmography is packed with some true crowd-pleasing projects as well as a few films that didn't work out so well.
Best: Zombieland (2009) - 7.6
The horror-comedy Zombieland followed in the footsteps of Shaun of the Dead in exploring the hilarity of a zombie apocalypse. Stone is joined by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin as a group of survivors who form a dysfunctional family while trying to stay alive.
The film has a lot of fun with the premise, taking great pleasure in their gory and gruesome zombie kills. But it is the talented cast that really makes the film work. It also doesn't hurt that there is one hilarious cameo as the cherry on top of it all.
Worst: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) - 5.8
During his romantic comedy days, Matthew McConaughey starred in this high concept movie. He plays a self-centered playboy who is visited by a spirit (Stone) who takes him back in time to revisit his history of dating to teach him a lesson about love.
While some found this to be a charming genre exercise, others found it to be all too familiar. Though Stone has fun with her role, the laughs were too lackluster for some audiences and the storyline was as predictable as it could get.
Best: Superbad (2007) - 7.6
Seeing as Stone made her film debut in one of the most beloved comedies of the 21st century, perhaps it's not too surprising she became a star. Superbad stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as a pair of high school outcasts who attempt to get the girls of their dreams during one epic night.
Filled with raunchy humor and hilarious performances, Superbad is a laugh-riot from beginning to end. Hill and Cera have wonderful chemistry, and Stone makes a very memorable debut as the charming love interest for Hill.
Worst: The House Bunny (2008) - 5.5
Before she was headlining her own comedies, Stone was part of an ensemble as with The House Bunny. Anna Faris plays a spoiled former Playboy playmate who gets kicked out of Hugh Hefner's mansion and becomes the mentor for a sorority house full of misfits, including Stone as an awkward yet eager girl.
Despite a talented cast and Faris' fun lead performance, the film was seen by many as so-so effort. The juvenile humor and slapstick gags only worked so well making the film somewhat forgettable.
Best: Birdman (2014) - 7.7
Stone earned her first Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the ambitious drama Birdman. Michael Keaton plays a washed-up actor who seeks to escape his past superhero role by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway play. On the days leading up to the first performance, things begin to unravel.
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu shot the film to appear as one continuous take which adds a frantic feel to the film. Keaton gives an intense and funny lead performance and he is joined by a stellar supporting cast, including Stone as his troubled daughter.
Worst: Aloha (2015) - 5.4
Despite Stone's talents, her role in Aloha has gone down as one of the most egregious miscasting moments in recent memory. Bradley Cooper stars as a military contractor who takes an assignment in Hawaii where he attempts to reconnect with a past love but ends up falling for a young Air Force member (Stone).
Stone is inexplicably cast as a half-Japanese Hawaiian native. Once you get passed that wild whitewashing, the movie is still a total mess that wastes its cast on an unfocused, unfunny, and uninteresting rom-com.
Best: The Help (2011) - 8.0
Based on the best-selling novel, The Help stars Stone as a young aspiring author living in the South in the 1960s where she is inspired to write a story about the African American women who work as maids for many of the rich white households.
While many agree the film is not a ground-breaking look at race at this time, it is an inspiring tale. It also features powerful performances by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer who are the true stars of the film.
Worst: Marmaduke (2010) - 4.3
Live-action movies with talking animals are never an easy sell for audiences and Marmaduke is no different. The film follows the titular Great Dane dog who tends to wreak havoc for his loving yet frustrated family. Stone lends her voice to one of the many talking dogs in the film.
Not only did the talking dog gag not work on many audiences, stretching a comic strip over the length of a movie didn't make for the most interesting story. Filled with lots of slapstick comedy and dog puns, even the youngest viewers might not find much to like with this one.
Best: La La Land (2016) - 8.0
Stone cemented herself as one of Hollywood's biggest stars after winning the Oscar for her lead performance in La La Land. This lavish musical from Damien Chazelle finds Stone playing an aspiring actress who falls for a struggle jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) as they both try to fulfill their dreams.
Stone is charming, heartbreaking, and mesmerizing in her role and her chemistry with Gosling is perfect for this love story. The film is filled with memorable songs and dance numbers that make it feel like an old school musical.
Worst: Movie 43 (2013) - 4.3
Rarely has so much talent come together to produce something so awful as Movie 43. The anthology film is a collection of short comedy films featuring stars like Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, and Chris Pratt and directed by the likes of James Gunn and Peter Farrelly.
The result of all these talented people is a painfully unfunny and dull collection of embarrassing misfires. It's not surprising that everyone involved has tried their best to distance themselves from the chaotic flop.
