A first look at Emily in Paris season 2 has been released, and it hints at the writers not learning from their biggest mistakes from the first season. Netflix has been home to a variety of movies and TV shows for all ages and tastes, and while many have been a success, others have been met with a lot of criticism. Falling into the latter category is Emily in Paris, a comedy-drama TV series created by Darren Star, the mind behind beloved series Beverly Hills 90210 and Sex and the City, though this new project hasn’t been as well-received as those.

Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an American working for a marketing firm in Chicago who is sent to Paris for an unexpected job opportunity after her boss is unable to take it. Emily is tasked with bringing “an American point of view” to a French firm named Savoir, but she doesn’t speak French and surely wasn’t ready for the cultural shock that awaited. Still, Emily manages to keep a positive attitude through a series of obstacles in her professional, social, and personal life, and manages to come out on top most of the time.

Emily in Paris was one of Netflix’s top TV shows when it was released, but many aspects of it were heavily criticized, as are its depiction of French people and their culture, Emily’s unbelievable ability to make friends on every corner and everyone immediately falling in love with her, and its inaccurate portrayal of social media and bloggers. Still, Emily in Paris was renewed for a second season, to be released on Netflix on December 22, 2021, but the first teaser trailer hints at the new episodes making the same mistakes, with Emily being the exact same as in season 1 even after all she went through.

The teaser shows Emily, Mindy (Ashley Park), and Camille (Camille Razat) vacationing in Saint Tropez, showing that Emily and Camille will eventually resolve their differences after that cliffhanger at the end of season 1. The teaser doesn’t reveal any plot details aside from a change of setting and Emily spending some quality time with her friends, but there’s still a lack of self-awareness to her, and the way she acts and how she’s still all about posting on her social media as she did in season 1 all point at season 2 repeating the same mistakes. Emily seems to continue to be a two-dimensional character and her ignorance of French culture hasn’t changed much, so those who expected season 2 to be an improvement shouldn’t keep their hopes high.

Ultimately, Emily in Paris is more of an escapist TV show than one with a complex plot and multi-layered characters, but that doesn’t mean the crew behind it shouldn’t be paying attention to the show’s biggest flaws and fix them for the benefit of the series, most notably its stereotypical (and borderline offensive) portrayal of French people and their culture. It’s still possible that the teaser is giving a different idea and the new episodes will be an improvement from season 1, but viewers will have to wait until December to confirm or deny this.
