Emilia Clarke’s role in Secret Invasion introduces an additional mutant into the MCU. Details about her character indicate that Nick Fury’s upcoming Disney+ show will deepen the MCU’s lineup of mutant heroes. From the looks of things, it would seem that Marvel is on the cusp of introducing Abigail Brand, a character with heavy ties to the X-Men’s corner of the Marvel Universe in the comic books.

Ever since Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan became the MCU’s first confirmed mutant, Marvel Studios has been shrewdly adding more mutants to the MCU. Through the live-action debuts of Mr. Immortal and El Aguila, She-Hulk: Attorney Law featured the introductions of two heroes who possess the X-Gene in Marvel Comics. In addition to its plans to use Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in Deadpool 3, Marvel is also planning to feature Sabra – a mutant Israel superhero – in Captain America: New World Order. Furthermore, Marvel has already confirmed that Namor the Sub-Mariner will share his comic book counterpart’s mutant origin when he finally joins the MCU in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Abigail Brand In Marvel Comics Explained

Emilia Clarke is reportedly playing Abigail Brand in Marvel’s Secret Invasion series. In the comic books, Abigail is a green-haired S.W.O.R.D. agent born to an alien woman and a mutant human. Having inherited the X-Gene from her father, Abigail is classified as a mutant in Marvel Comics. As for her powers, she has the ability to produce flames around her hands. Stronger than natural fire, Abigail’s flames can burn through highly-durable materials, which makes her a threat to superhuman opponents. This, combined with her weapon skills and years of experience in the field, make Abigail a deadly asset to S.W.O.R.D.

Over the years, Abigail slowly climbed through the ranks of S.W.O.R.D. and eventually became its director. During her time at the intelligence agency, she worked closely with the X-Men to fight extraterrestrial threats and also developed a romantic relationship with Beast, with whom she’s shared many adventures. Due to the power and authority she holds at S.W.O.R.D., Abigail has been in a position to help Marvel’s heroes in conflicts with the Skrulls, Thanos, and more.

How Emilia Clarke's Abigail Brand Can Fit Into The MCU's Secret Invasion

Abigail Brand is a logical choice for a show like Secret Invasion, as a character with her background would fit well into a show about fighting the Skrulls. Not only was Abigail directly involved in the comic book version of the Secret Invasion story, but she’s someone with a long history of investigating and combating alien invaders with S.W.O.R.D. With that being the case, there’s a strong chance that she’ll be an ally to Nick Fury, or at least someone regarded as a character he can trust. Due to the very nature of the Secret Invasion concept, Emilia Clarke’s character shouldn’t be ruled out as a double agent, especially since it’s at least possible that the Skrulls of the MCU have replaced the original person with an Abigail Brand imposter.

It makes sense that Secret Invasion will utilize Emilia Clarke’s Abigail Brand as an agent of S.W.O.R.D., but what’s not clear is how much of her comic book origin will be applied to the MCU interpretation of her character. Marvel may or may not keep her alien connections when it introduces her onto the small screen. Her X-Gene, though, won’t need a complex explanation and can easily be incorporated into the series in the same way that She-Hulk quietly brought in Mr. Immortal and El Aguila. Plus, her inclusion in Secret Invasion makes the show a perfect opportunity for Marvel to have a character like Nick Fury formally acknowledge the existence of mutants in the MCU.

Emilia Clarke's Abigail Brand Future Beyond Secret Invasion: Where Else Could She Appear?

Marvel Comics Abigail Brand Beast

Assuming that Abigail Brand does turn out to be a genuine ally to Nick Fury and survives the events of Secret Invasion, she’s a character Marvel could certainly use again. Arguably the best option for an Abigail Brand appearance after the show would be The Marvels. After all, the Phase 5 movie is a cosmic adventure that has Monica Rambeau, an established S.W.O.R.D. agent in the MCU, serving as one of the principal characters. With her on-hand, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if more of their people – Abigail included – show up in the movie. And perhaps when Marvel finally begins to transition toward the X-Men, Emilia Clarke’s character can return once more and develop a presence in their movies. A proper team-up with the MCU’s Beast might even be in order.
