A new clip from the biopic Elvis showcases Presley's signature, crowd-pleasing dance moves with spectacular cinematic flourish. The upcoming biographical drama Elvis, directed by acclaimed Australian director Baz Luhrmann, follows the life, legend, and career of iconic rock-n-roll singer and movie star Elvis Presley. Presley became a cultural icon for his influential rock music stylings and energetic, sexual persona in the 1950s and 60s. Actor Austin Butler will be portraying the titular character, a role he nabbed after being considered alongside Harry Styles, Miles Teller, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, among other A-list actors.
The highly anticipated Elvis film is adapted from a screenplay written by Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner, with a story by Luhrmann and Doner. Accompanying Butler in the lead role includes Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, as well as Helen Thompson and Richard Roxburgh as Presley's mother and father. In addition to chronicling the span of his life and career, Elvis will focus in particular on Presley's relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played in the film by Tom Hanks.
An exciting new clip from Elvis shared by Warner Bros. Pictures reveals a glimpse of Butler's moves as the magnetic rock-n-roll star. The two-minute-long trailer shows Butler as Presley, donned in an oversized pink and black suit with his black hair effortlessly slicked back in his iconic signature style. He emphatically strums his guitar to the song "Hayride" as he shows off his dance moves to a screaming crowd of surprised but adoring women.

This latest Elvis trailer shows off Luhrmann's signature flair for dramatic and sensational musical storytelling. This is something also showcased in his previous films, such as Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby and Luhrmann's first hit, Strictly Ballroom. Lurhmann's style lends itself effectively to the energy and glamorous exuberance indicative of the rise of rock-n-roll culture in the 1950s, as well as the revolutionary trajectory of Presley's career and celebrity. Similarly, the director's history in creating films that are either musicals, or that heavily reference and involve music and pop culture, proves he is perfectly suited to helming a story like Elvis.
The film and its production have been an extensive work in progress, with initial announcements for the project appearing all the way back in 2014. As Elvis' release date finally draws near after a delay due to COVID-19, buzz continues to fly around how the film will portray the beloved Presley, as well as how it might live up to the success of other musical biopics in previous years, such as Rocket Man and Bohemian Rhaposody. Elvis will premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival this year, before releasing in the United States on June 24, 2022, when Presley's famous moves will receive a brand new audience.
