Warning: Spoilers for Werewolf By Night

A seemingly inconsequential change to her father’s backstory in Werewolf by Night could result in Elsa getting a different set of powers in the MCU. Following the defeat of the Halloween special’s villains, Elsa finally got her hands on the Bloodstone, which promises to grant her new abilities. Similar to how it helped Ulysses in his fight against supernatural monsters, Elsa can wield the Bloodstone to become a deadly MCU superhero.

An easy-to-miss detail in Werewolf by Night’s opening sequence reveals that the MCU quietly changed how Ulysses Bloodstone’s powers work, and this could in turn affect Elsa as well. In the artwork that depicted Ulysses in his prime, he could be seen holding up the Bloodstone in a fight with a monster, whereas the comic book version had the meteorite shard permanently lodged inside his chest. Because the Bloodstone had actually become a part of him, many of his powers passed on to Elsa when she was conceived. But considering that the Bloodstone was just a weapon for its take on Ulysses, the MCU has apparently opted to head in a different direction with the two characters.

How Elsa Bloodstone’s MCU Powers Might Be Different

In the comics, Elsa possessed super strength and certain immunities to supernatural attacks with or without the Bloodstone, which meant that even if it were somehow taken from her in battle, she was still a force to be reckoned with. Not only that, but the Bloodstone further enhanced the gifts she already had. Since Laura Donnelly’s character doesn’t share the same origin story, it would make sense if she’s a bit weaker than her comic counterpart in all categories. Plus, having to carry the Bloodstone can serve as a weakness for her in a fight, as taking it away would most likely rob her of her superhuman gifts and leave her vulnerable.

The Bloodstone’s Powers Explained

Werewolf by Night defined some of the Bloodstone’s capabilities when Verussa asked Elsa why she wanted it. She mentioned “longevity”, “protection”, and “strength” as some of the benefits Elsa would reap from obtaining the Bloodstone. These are all major perks, but they aren’t the extent of the Bloodstone’s powers. As shown in the fight with Jack Russell’s Werewolf by Night, it can also hurt monsters and emit devastating energy blasts. And in the comics, the Bloodstone also allows the wielder to see into people’s minds and move objects telekinetically. As for the MCU, it remains to be seen if the Bloodstone boasts the same abilities.

Given how useful such an artifact could be, chances are Werewolf by Night won’t be the last time it or Elsa makes an appearance in the MCU. In addition to the possibility of Laura Donnelly's Elsa Bloodstone embarking on her own monster-hunting adventures, the Bloodstone could wind up drawing her into other characters’ stories as the Multiverse Saga continues. Numerous MCU villains could develop designs on it, while heroes like Blade could consider Elsa to be a valuable ally because of its powers.
